I bought a starter tank kit which came with a whisper filter, flake food and a chlorine killer liquid. After a week or so, I noticed that there was a light layer of foam at the surface of the water. The foam maintained it shape even after I touched it and tried to get rid of it. I scraped the top of the tank to get rid of teh foam. A couple weeks later, 2 of my fish were dead! And now it looks like the third is about to die! agh!!! Are their deaths related to the foam?

How big is your starter tank exactly? I assume that as it's a starter tank it is very small and probably not big enough for 3 goldfish. I also suspect that your fish are becoming victims of new tank syndrome. Levels of ammonia and nitrite quickly increase and become toxic to fish in new and cycling tanks (see 'cycle of the tank' in the menu on the left) and the only way to relieve the stress for the fish is by doing daily water changes of 30%. I strongly advise you start this now. I also suggest that you buy test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates so that you can moniter your water quality as this is the most important thing for fish.
As for the bubbles - I'm not sure what they are. Have you ever washed your tnka with soap? Could anything ahve been introduced on your hands to the tank? Could it just be the dechlorintor causing the bubbles?
Start the water changes as mentioned above and keep them up for the time being. This should help your fish and hopefully reduce the foam on the tank.

Thank you Fishyfan for your suggestions. My starter tank is 10 gallons. I will go and get a test kit and make sure that all the levels are acceptable for new fish.

The foam is a mystery. I never used soap during the innitial cleaning of the tank. I think it has something to do with the filter. I will update you on my progress. Thanks again!!

What exactlly is this Chlorine killer stuff called??

The name of the chlorine killer is "Aqua Safe Water conditioner." My friend thinks that the foam is either from the water conditioner or the filter.

Bad news...I found the last fish dead today. Sniff Sniff sad.gif

What should my pH, ammonia and nitrate levels be? What is considered safe?

Goldfish will adapt to pretty much any pH as long as its stable. Ideal pH is 7.0 but mine hovers around 8.0 and my fish are just fine. You always want ammonia and nitrite to be at 0, or very close to it during the cycle. Anything over 1.0 can be deadly, and moreso if your pH is higher. Nitrate is harmless except at very high levels over a long period of time. I try to keep my nitrates around 20 ppm.

Im sorry you ended up losing all your fish. Dont feel bad, we all started out somewhere. I think if you start over again and use the info on this site you'll be a lot more successful the second time around! A 10 gallon is perfect for one goldfish. Just make sure to monitor your water quality carefully, especially at the beginning, and you should be fine.

My guess is that the foaming could be related to the poor water quality and a combination of the Aqua Safe. Did you do a water change at all the whole time you had the fish? IF not that could be why.

Thanks for the advice on water levels jsrtist! The kit I bought didn't say what was acceptable and which were harmful for the fish.

I am very disapointed that I lost my fish. sad.gif I am hoping (for their sake) that I have much better luck now with all this great advice! Cross your fingers for me!

I had the tank and fish for a little over 3 weeks. Around 2 weeks I did a 30% water change. Maybe I shocked the poor fish.

Thank you everyone for all your wonderful advice and support. biggrin.gif
