please, could you not use cap locks, thanks.
the snails wont eat the babies but if theres no hiding spot then the parents will. as with all livebearers just provide plenty of cover and just wait. patience is whats needed.

the guppies i doubt, but what kind of snails do you have.
Raith
Apr 19 2005, 11:42 AM
depends on what KIND of plants. hehehe. fry like to nibble on small plant particles.. and if you have a lot of fry, then your plant might get ruined. this REMEMBER, depends on what kinds of plant. as for adults, no they dont eat plants anymore.
btw, a pregnant female will lay on the bottom if shes ready to give birth and you can see a very very dark area around her gravid spot. and she might have her 'vent' open as well, sometimes.

She was swimming and hitting her stomach on the marbles one day and then she stopped, but there was nothing different. The snail is a black ramshorn baby.
Thanks!!

ALthough I have a guppy now,it's been alot of years since I had fry,but for some reason I'm thinking two months is too long on that pregnacy. I am certainly no Guppy Expert, but I though it was more like every three to four weeks for birth?? Now don't quote me on this, because my memory is old,and could be wrong.I know two Guppy Fry Expertsa on this,TD & Daryl.....We'll have to see if thye come to our rescue on this.

Oh by the way,Ramshorn will definately eat your plants.

Guppys give birth every 30 days or so. maybe the young are being eaten as soon as they are born and because the female is carrying sperm then she can be pregnant straight away and the gravid spot is always there.
Raith
Apr 20 2005, 02:38 PM
yeah, the female carries 6batches of male sperm..

Just to point out to anyone else reading this that 3 males to 1 female isnt fair on the females as they get exhausted from the chasing and constantly being pregnant. Ideally, it should be 3 females or more to one male and only if you dont mind them breeding.

Good point Sandy! I've seen females actually die from the constant chasing & being pregnant all the time. Raith ,their immune systems go lower & illness is easier to set in on them. Always keep more females to males, and I've allready had tanks with one sex in it,just because I didn't want to get over populated with babies-which will happen rather fast with Guppies.

From everything I've read,sperm for
3broods sounds about right.

id kill myself if it was 3males to 1female. cause males would harass the crap out of the female, anyway, biggy guppy is about to be pregnant again. well, two actually. more litter more litter. when theyre close to labor i tend to feed the guppies more.

While we are on the topic of guppies...
All mine died, and I don't know why. They would be fine, then a few hours later their gills would be swollen and puffy, their color would pale, and they would die. All I have left are two fry in a little bowl.
Is this some disease? Or could it be genetic? (inbred petstore guppies x.x)

two question:
1. stress?
2. water quality?
it sounds like the water quality is bad from what youre talking about.

I change the water once about every 2 weeks because it is just a little 2 gallon with 1 snail and a male guppy and a female guppy. The guppies were given to us, We do not check the water levels becuase the fish are always swimming around, so we gigure that they are okay!!! The tank has an undergravel filter, and might be getting a biobag filter, the one that mounts in your tank, that comes with the 2.5 gallon at walmart or they might the 2.5 gallon from walmart. I do not know yet because we are on a tight budget!!!
Thanks!!!!!

Can you put the pregnant guppy in another tank with no other fish, and let her give birth there or just let her be in the main tank.
Thanks!

yes, thats viable. have a lot of plants or the mommy will devour the young.

Okay, but do you think if i wait till about May 20th and put her in a ten gallon with 5 plants, will she wait until then?
Thanks!
Raith
Apr 28 2005, 12:29 PM
im not sure if a fish can learn to how to 'wait', depends on how black her gravid spot is, if its brownish tannish black, i wouldnt worry about it. if its pitched black i would start considering.
020292
Apr 28 2005, 02:39 PM
It is a light black, becuase you can still see some red.
Thanks!

i wouldnt be too worried, the fry is being developed.

I mommy died while giving birth, so when we found here, Monday, she had a head of a baby fish coming out of the back end, so we got her into a little tank and we used the net and squeezed her and babies came out and they are not moving yet. Will they survive?
Thanks!

I believe that they should be free swimming as soon as they come out so if they are not moving then I dont think they ever will

if the mother dies, the fry will die with her. squeezing might have stressed the fry out. thats too much for the fry. next time dissect the mother.

What does disect the mother mean? They are still curled in a ball but thay are moving their fins.
Thanks.

Dissecting means to cut her open. You are probably too young still but in school you usually disect a frog or some other animal for class.
Raith

usually biology teaches dissection. they probably broke their backs(gups). best of luck, though.

remove it as soon as possible, they are now considered 'waste'.
