Any one have any ideas for DIY decorations for a fish tank? i get bored alot. any one have ant suggestions for me? i was thinking of a teracota pot cave with rocks hot glued to it to make it look thooper. any ideas for other things?

the pot reminds me of an old idea.

POT, use a chisel, slowly cut a straight halve of the POT, making it a covering a -- CAVE for the fish.

thats the only DIY suggestion ive got. other decors i just buy glassware and porcelain items and place it in the tank.

do ya think it would be ok to hot glue rocks on it to make it look more... cavey?

I have read of people gluing rocks over it but I think they did it with aquarium sealant.

You could try making your own silk plants!

Its rather easy to do too....

Whenever your in a place like walmart, ace, home depot, whatever, be sure to look into the silk plant selection. You will see all kinds. Pick some that you like and you can cut the stems and glue them to little piles of river rocks and stuff. Just remember that if it is silk and plastic, they are safe. Make well and sure to rinse them in hot water for a bit before adding them to the tank though.

You can come up with all sorts of combos of plants and rocks and caves. Get yourself a few tubes of aquarium selant, a bag of river rocks (small and medium) and some silkies and you got yourself more decorations than you can handle.

The best part about all this is that whatever you make, you can take apart. a little elbow-grease and a box cutter will do the trick........

Good luck. Hope this helped! biggrin.gif

You can get the aquarium sealant at Petsmart or probably Walmart even. I wouldn't use hot glue though.

plus, I came to found hot glue doesnt work that well! I tried to make a cave once and hot glue the rocks to it, and the rocks would not stay on after the glue dried. Some of them did, but not many! The sealent works soooooooooooooo much better. Its not real expensive and their a pretty big tube. You could probably makes TONS and TONS of caves, plants.. anything you would like for the tank with one tube! Good Luck! biggrin.gif

I was thinking that it might be possible to make your very own cave vy spraying a mound of 'GREAT STUFF' sealant and wrapping it in fiberglass. I think that the only difficult thing after that would be making the texture/paint look lifelike, but it's a thought...

Fiberglass, although great after it has cured for a VERY long time, really shouldnt be used in aquariums.

Great stuff (don't know what its made of) shouldn't be used either if you don't know the chemistry involved.

tried and true materials are river rock, aquarium sealant, superglue, plastics and gravels. But, concrete would make a VERY good cave, It would also need quite a bit less curing time than fiberglass too. Also, you can coat it with and epoxy resin to seal it. Epoxy, as I understand it, doesn't need to cure for very long either.

Hope this helps........ biggrin.gif

i always wondered if i could add fake plants,
are there any kind that arent safe?
will they say silk on them

Almost any silk plants are fine. You just don't want it to have glitter or a "raindrop" effect on it or anything. About 2 weeks ago I finished filling my tank with fake plants. The fish love it! I had a hard time with the aquarium sealant from my lfs so instead I stuck the stem of the silk plant in some plastic canvas & buried it in the gravel. Worked like a charm!
