I was in the lfs the other day, and in the goldie tank they had a loach-like fish, but swimming around with the goldies, not down on the bottom. I asked the guy what it was and he said it was a 'barbel'. I did a search on go0gle and the only Barbel fish that came up was a river living game type of fish, that didn't look anything like the one I saw in the shop.
Just wondered if anyone else had come across it and knew anything about them.

The fish in that pic looks like a weather loach, I think.
I haven't heard of a barbel fish.

hi again,
no it wasn't a weather loach, I've got two of those, although it does look similar due to the whiskery things on its face. It was a silver colour all over and had quite a pronounced dorsal fin. I asked if it was a loach and he said no, a Barbel. It was constantly swimming around the top of the tank.
It's a mystery.

Maybe a Barbus barbus? It goes by the common name of Barbel but it gets pretty big, 80 cm.
Or it could be a Lepidocephalichthys guntea which is called a Barbeled Loach but looks somewhat unloach like.

I think it may have been a Barbus Barbus, thanks TroyJames, that's the closest looking. You'd need a big pond for a group of them.
