My wife seems to have pinpointed the problem with Fishy, according to all we have researched he is showing the symptoms of Septicimia. (i.e. Lethargy, Blood Red spots at the base of his pectoral fins, little / black stool)

We have moved Fishy to a seperate hospitial tank since we are afraid of the Septicimia being contagious.

Fishy has had the symptoms for ~1 week. I have contacted a local seller that sells on eBay (ebaeseller) and have ordered Maracyn-2, and I am finding out how quickly I can get it from him (hopefully tomorrow, Sunday).

With Fishy showing symptoms for over a week now, can we expect to still treat and cure the Septicimia? (We really really hope so!).

We want any and all advice on what we need to do!

Thanks!!!

i have had 6 fish live through it smile.gif

However it did start treating 5 of those very quickly, but the one case my fish had it for at least 2 weeks before i found out how to treat it.

I had one who had it and survived. I used Interpet's anti internal bacteria med.

I used Maracyn-2 on my fish when he had Septicimia and he's doing great! I found it worked fantastically.

This is treatable and the fish generally respond quickly and very well. Most important - more than ANY medicine or ANYTHING else - make sure the water parameters are PERFECT. Zero acoss the board. Change the water every day (or more) if necessary. With clean water, Fishy will already be ahead of the game by the time your meds arrive.

Good luck. smile.gif

Hello smile.gif

I echo what Daryl says....in 100% of cases, water parameters that are perfect will only help you and never hinder you. In a lot of cases, poor water conditions are what lead to a lot of disease and increased fishy stress

GOOD LUCK!

Are you absolutely SURE its septicemia? Ammonia and nitrite poisoning look a lot like it and a lot of people jump to that conclusion. Is your tank relatively new or have you medicated recently? I wouldnt move the fish or do a water change… make sure the water quality is good in your main tank. Ive found that good water quality is the best, and least stressful, of all medications. Good luck.

From what I remember of Thomas_crowe his tank is relatively new and I think not yet cycled

Hello all;

The 30gallon tank that Fishy came out of has not yet cycled, however I am checking the parameters basically every other day, and through out ammonia and nitrite have remained at 0.

Initially Fish and Spotty were in a very bad tank, that did have ammonia present, we treated it with Ammo-lock, but decided in the end that a new tank was the ONLY way to go. So we moved Fishy and Spotty from a 2.5gal eclipse into a 30gal Oceanic Hexagon. We also added a comet into the new tank (Ori).

Ori and Spotty both seem to be doing great in the 30gal, and the ammonia and nitrite have remained at 0. (unfortunetly so have the nitrates).

The situation now is:

Ori and Spotty seem to be doing well in a new 30gal hexagon tank. Ammonia, and Nitrite have remained at zero. That tank has a Emperor 280 Biowheel filter on it. The base of that tank is primarly crushed shell (for carbonate, we have very soft water). The Ph has remained consistent at 7.8. We added ~2oz of Bio-Spira directly on the Bio-Wheel on Monday night, hoping to get some good bugs started.

Fishy currently resides in a new 10gal hospitial tank, no gravel, no ornaments, nothing. There is a wisper filter on that tank, however all of the wisper filters I could find contain Charcoal, so there is no filter media in that filter at present. Ammonia and Nitrite are at 0, and I am watching that VERY closely! We added 1/3oz of Bio-Spira to that tank on Monday evening. (I don't think that it will take hold since there is essientially no place for the bacteria to setup) Monday evening we also started Fishy on Maracyn-2 (2 Tablets on Monday night, then 1 per night for the next 5 nights)

I have MediGold and ProGold on order from Goldfish connection. As soon as we get the MediGold, everyone is going on that for 30 days.

One thing I have been considering, but am still looking for more information on, is salt treatments. I belive that they are primarly for parasitic infestations, however I seem to also recall that they will help the fish absorb more of the antibiotic when they are added.

What about water changes in the hospital tank? I know if ANY ammonia or nitrites show up, that I need to change the water, but the Maracyn-2 packaging seems to suggest not changing the water through the treatment. If I do have to do a water change, how should I adjust the dosage of the Maracyn-2???

Thanks to everyone on this wonderful board!!!!
