I need one for my 50 gal. Would it be better to just get those big black ones instead of just 2 small ones? What kind should I look for? This is for my goldfish tank.

I also need a new light for my 20 gal. tropical tank. It doesn't work anymore! It wasn't a hood, just the light and the plastic to keep it on. What would be a good kind? Thanks.

I had the two smaller hoods on my 55 gallon. I kinda liked them, but when i decided to go with live plants, I had to get a new hood because those hoods only hold 2 15 watt bulbs. If you want one of the long ones, they can be nice, because they hold more wattage as far as lights go. I bought a coralife light hood. I absolutely love it. The top is open, and the light has two brackets that holds it up above the tank. Looks very cool in my opinion. But if your looking for something cheaper, I would go with the whatever you think looks better, or is cheaper!

If at any time a flourescent lighting fixture, on aquariums, quits working, one of two things has burned out:

1- the bulb went bad and needs replacing.Flourescent lightbulbs need replacing yearly anyway.

2- the starter went bad (small can shaped fitting just behind the flourescent lightbulb). The starters job is to give the bulb a little help in getting the mercury vapors inside glow from the electrical currents. Once the light comes on, the starter is no longer needed and the ballast controls the currents until the light is turned off.

The bubl is self explanatory and the starter can be bought for next to nothing at a local hardware store or a lighting/lamp store. They are veeeery easy to replace too!. Just twist and pull to remove, then replace by reversing the steps.

I hope this helps you some! biggrin.gif
