They are pretty cool...I have quite a few of them, but as js said, they're not all that easy of a pet. They need humidty, fresh and Saltwater etc... It's not so much as the Hermit Crab is all that very difficult,it's more that people go into the purchase "uninformed",and don't really know the Requirements to keep them alive.Kids buy them ,take them home, and think now what...because Hermit Crabs may either bury theirself from the stress,or may just sit there and do nothing. If you set them up right,Hermies are really cool.My Crabs are very active. There are a few that stay buried alot during the day,& don't come out until night, but I also have about a half dozen or so that are constantly active. As I said Goldfishman, the shell is their only protection. They come from the wild,on beaches & such where it is open to anyone/thing to hurt it. Samething as a turtle without a shell. It's a place to get some shelter,to "duck" inside" to hide incase some walks up to eat it,or someone flys down to scoop it up for dinner. If it didn't have a shell to call home,it wouldn't last very long. The crab's body is very very soft .Out in the open,it could easily be scratched by a twig or something & become infected,it's twice as easy to eat it,step on it.....etc.
