I have a corner of my house where my fish tank is now, but its only a 90cm long tank.. and only about 100L. Not enough for my goldies, but i have 2 other big plastic tubs around the house with the other goldies in them hehe, anyway. So what i'm after is a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft as i have 4ft to work with otherwise the tank will fall into the doorway, but i actually went out and looked at some tanks today and oh my gosh it is huge, maybe i didn't anticipate how big it actually was but its massive! 423L or 115gallons of goldy goodness!

I was wondering how do people filter such a beast of a tank? I currently have a 1200L canister and a 1200L internal, but to get the 10x filtration needed i need over 4230L/hr!!! I'll need like 4 of the biggest canisters or put more ugly and noisy internals in. What do you guys with massive tanks do?

I think i'll actually have to ask the real estate if i can have this one, i have a 3ft tank which they dont have a problem with and never asked them for, but this tank + stand is as tall as me Thud.gif and i hate talking to real estate people unless i get rejected, they can be pretty nasty!!

Sounds like a big tank! Good luck with the RE.

Filtation on big tanks is a bit of a challenge, I have a 6 foot long 125 gallon tank. What I did was put a penguin 350 at each end and I have a rena XP3 set up in in the middle. That gives me 1050 gph. I am 200 gph short of the 10X rule but will be adding another cannister filter when funds permit.

I really like the cannister type filters but will keep the penguins on the ends, I find I get lots of water flow and very few dead spots.

PS Good luck with the Real Estate people biggrin.gif

Thanks smile.gif I really dont want to call the real estate, they scare me. Maybe i'll go with a smaller tank (4 x 1.5 x 1.5 or something) so it wont stand out like a sore thumb in my lounge room and they wont mind? But that means i have no more room for any more fish *sniff*.

My initial plan was to get a couple HOB filters + 1 or 2 canisters, however the tanks i have looked at that are 4x2x2 have the supports on the top and you cant fit a HOB filter, which is the same problem i have on my current tank.

I'm still not sure on what to do, i just dont want to cause trouble with the landlord, money isn't really an issue, i wish i owned my own house already...

You could be getting worked up for nothing. I used to be in a very confrontational occupation and some days I had to force myself to go into work because I was dreading a particular meeting or something. I found that 9 times out of 10 the things I were dreading were a piece of cake.

John has a good motto, "what's the worst that could happen?", if the real estate says no, "is it really going to change my life?".

I have another theory, "what they don't know won't hurt them". I always used to keep pets when I was renting, nothing every happened. How strong is your floor? can it take the weight of such a big tank? If you are confident it can - then go for it.

yea i'm probably getting worked up for nothing, but like you i hate confrontation. I already have my 90cm tank and i'm sure the real estate knows about it because we've had like 3 inspections, however they are not on the lease but my other pets are. So i'm afraid if i call them and ask them and they say no then they might make me get rid of my other tank.... and i REALLY dont want that to happen..

The house is fairly old (and old queenslander), but i'm pretty sure it can handle the weight, and if it ever did leak it would just fall through the cracks in the floor (by cracks i mean between the planks tongue.gif)

At least you have a nice up-draft in summer through the floor! laugh.gif
