Just wondering.....What kind of rocks should I stay away from when setting up a new tank for my GF?

I would be careful with some colored rocks. ive heard of the dye coming off of them in the water and hurting fish. not sure if its true. I have used colored rocks before, and had great luck with ... oh gosh... now I cant even remember the name, but I know its the brand Petco carries... and the petco here only carries that one brand. I personally LOVE river rocks.

Be careful with size. Goldfish like to pick up and move rocks, and if they are small enough to fit in their mouths, they could choak them. I also love river rocks, and have them in my tank.

Is there any size rocks that are too big? the reason I ask is because I think I have already screwed up! I have a 10 gal tank for my small oranda Gomez. I have to keep him alone because he is very prone to all sorts of things, but I put these beautiful smooth white rocks in there and they are the size of a small potatoe. well not even that big but when I feed my fish, his food gets in the crevises of the rocks and so does his waste and you can see it. It looks really bad! I was just wondering if this can cause water problems!

Hi Dawn. Yeah that uneaten food and waste isn't good for your water. Alot of people use the river rocks so I think your rocks are prob ok, but when you do your water changes you'll need to use the vac to get that stuff up. If your rocks are too big to be able to vac it up, you might have to consider changing it though.
