Hi everyone,

No doubt there will be many out there who, like me are dreading the coming hurricane season..not least because of our goldies!

Where I live we were out of power for 10 days..back in the days before I had any tanks.. Now that I have 3 tanks I am wondering the best way to keep my fishies alive during power outs.

Does anyone have any experience of LONG power-outs and what should I do for a 29 gallon with 2 small ryukins in it?

I managed to snag the last 2 battery operated airstones in my lfs, and am planning on doing a pre-hurricane test on how long the batteries last!

The tank is in a room with no direct sunlight and gets quite dark during the day will they be affected without the hood lights running for so long? ( I know this will decrease the heat build up so it might be a good thing..)

Would 25% water changes every day be enough?

So many questions smile.gif and the clock is ticking till the barometer starts to fall sad.gif

That is wonderful you are trying to prepare before anything happens.
I know that some members last year talked about generators. I don't know if this would be in the budget, but if it is I think it is the best way to go.

Good luck and let's hope this year isn't as active as last year.

I know all too well about them darn hurricanes! Jacksonville beach gets her share of storm surges and high velocity winds. boom.gif

Yep! generators are probably going to be your best bet if you wanted to keep some assemblence of a normal life throughout a hurricane. If you cannot really afford a generator, you could try one or two of these around the house:

battery charger/power supply

There are MANY different brands and sizes you can choose from. I suggest getting 1 size larger than you would expect to need. Just in case, you know?

I feel you you guys in Bermuda. It seems like most hurricanes that make it to the east coast uses the coastal contour to slingshot right at you! unsure.gif

Hope this helps!

Oi, hurricanes - don't remind me! I was in the middle of all three last year, and thanks to generators everybody made it out okay. I don't know if you are on well water or city water, but being on well water definetely has its plus. Our small generator powered the wellpump for things like water changes and showers, then we switched back to using it for basic power stuff like running the fridge and half the fish filtration. I didnt' mind sweating as long as the fish had their basic needs covered....
But of course this year we won't hear or see anything of hurricanes. At least thats what I am hoping. Although doesn't sund that way from the hurricane forcasters, does it? unsure.gif

You will need a lot of batteries, mine on size D batteries last effectively for barely 30 hours

Thanks everyone!

I am doing a test with the battery operated airstone to see how long they go..30 hrs seems good to me! I wasnt expecting them to go more than 12!!

Yes we do have a generator, bought one AFTER Fabian hit us ..Must get into the monthly maintenance thing with it or it will be USELESS.. I tend to be what my husband calls "Belt and Braces" kinda girl..always have a back-up plan for my back-up plan!! biggrin.gif

Lots of food for thought Thankyou Guys heartpump.gif
