I have the most boring betta ever. He's just not thriving.
When I got him, he was of course being kept in about 3oz of water, the poor guy. The first one that I got was in the same condition, I brought him home and put him in his new big 3gal tank and he did great. He's really flourished, is a beautiful fish and always builds huge bubble nests.
This second one, the little red one, well, he's in hos own 3gal setup as well, but he acts like he's still in the shot glass he came in. He just never has done well. He lays around all day and doesn't swim about unless it's to get food on occasion.
They both get 50% water changes daily to keep the water paramaters within limits, both get the same amount of light/food, etc.
He doesn't appear to have any illnesses or anything.
I don't know what else to do for him.

Can he see the other betta fish? Sometimes bettas don't appear to be sick, but simply get depressed. Maybe you could arrange your tanks so they could see each other. Also, have you ruled out internal infection? Even if he doesn't look sick, is his poo a normal color?

Looks pretty normal to me....
I had the tanks close together originally so they could see one another, and then the blue Betta just kinda acted all bummed and hid in his plant. The red one acted the same then as he does now. I figured they were intimidated by each other and seperated the tanks.
I'll try and find the red one a safe spot where there's at least a little more going on, though. Thanks.

Kelli, try adding a little bit aquarium or rock salt to the tank. Bettas love that!

50% water changes daily seem a bit excessive. It seems like that might stress them out. Have you considered just getting a small filter and cycling the tanks? My bettas are both in cycled tanks and are thriving.

My bettas are pretty boring too - I just got them over the weekend and they perk up when I come to the vase, but otherwise the just sit near the bottom or where ever and do nothing. I think when I get alittle extra cash I am going to get a bigger tank and a divider for them - right now they are in the little betta vases. I know don't start - but it's more than the inch of water they had at the store.
