Anyone have experience with this variety of fish? I'm starting to have lots of algae build-up in my tank. I find myself cleaning off algea from the tank glass every time I change water (every 3 days)! Thus, I was thinking of getting a fish that feeds on algae. However, I don't like the appearance of most catfish. The only fish I have found so far who appears 'cute' to me is the Dwarf Sucker Catfish (Otocinclus family). I also like them because they are small (under 2 inches). Should I get one? Do I need to get two or more? I would really prefer not to have more than one since I don't want to overstock my tank. Are there any similar alternatives?

Otos are not a good choice for a goldfish tank, since goldfish will often try and eat them and because they have barbs they will get lodged in the goldfish's throat.

If you want to keep them in a tropical tank, they are a great choice. I would recommend a group of at least 3. They are quite fragile when first purchased, but once you get through the first month, they seem extremely hardy, providing they have adequate algae, or algae discs to feed on.

The best algae eater, imo, for the goldfish tank, is the bristlenose pleco (ancistrus). Not pretty, but extremely efficient.

Are there any other small/cute choices similar to the Oto? sad.gif

Not really since all of those that are in that group have barbs on there back and goldfish will eat them its not a good idea to have them together sad.gif

If you're lucky enough to find some true Siamese Algae Eaters, they are mighty fine algae eaters and don't have barbels. Also the bristlenose plecos may not seem attractive at first, but they seem to grow on you.

But Siamese Algae Eaters are aggressive and will try to eat the slim coat off the goldfish, I have seen this, this fish isn't good with goldfish......Bristle nose and Rubber nose are the best with goldfish for controlling algae biggrin.gif

Koko, I believe you may have had some experience with an imitator fish, the True Siamese Algae Eaters are very peaceful fish and are quite compatible with goldfish as far as I know.
