Hi everyone

My comet is in a tank at the mo, but it doesnt have any filters or anything.
I know this is bad for the fish and so i want to buy everything to give it a good place to live!

The problem is i have no idea what i need!

If anyone could help me that would be great, and what size tank should i get for a 6 inch goldfish?

Thanks
puggirl
ok if you have only one fish, the comet and he is 6 inches he will grow bigger, so try to buy the biggest tank you can afford for him, anything over 30 gallons would be best. then you will need a good filter. and then you can add anything extra you like i think live plants, they look great and are fantastic for your tank. but have a look through this site and you will learn alot, i think many more people will reply to your post and perhaps tell you of some good brand of filters and ones that are best for you fish and tank, as i dont really know that much about filters. good luck biggrin.gif

hi bec! biggrin.gif

I can remember feeling a bit daunted when I started out with goldies, and I found one article on here particularly useful to help get my brain round things.

Here is a link to it:

I'd have a read of that and then come back with questions smile.gif

Hi, thanks for your replies.

Ive read the article, it was very interesting and helped alot!

I thought i'd need to buy loads of stuff bit it seems like all i have to buy is a better tank (30 gallons) and a filter with a built in air supply feature.

Does anyone know how much these cost in the UK and which type of filter is best?

I dont have much money to spend unfortunatly so i'll be looking for a good filter but one thats cheap!

Another thought is to look around for second hand equipment. I have purchased a lot of my tanks second hand, and the savings are enormous.

Check out bulletin boards, classified ad5, aquariums societies and the like. Some aquarium societies even have websites with on-line classifieds. I put an ad on one of these and got a great deal on my 66 gallon set up.

Good luck and welcometo.jpg

You can buy a 30 gallon tank fairly cheaply (around £25 for a basic tank without a hood) in one of the larger retail stores like Pets At Home. I would suggest something like a Fluval 4+ internal power filter (around £40) as this will give you good filtration for nowhere near the cost of a canister filter. It aerates and well as filters (it has a buil-in venturi device for surface agitation) and is fairly easy to run and maintain; I had two of them for years. As for a hood, if you want one with a light already built in that's probably going to be at least £50, I'm afraid (plus the tube itself - around £8). A plain one is much less, but of course you can't see your fish in the evenings!

It is definitely worth surfing around on ebay too as you can pick up some real bargains there very cheaply.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

Try looking online as well. I'll post the website i bought my fluval 104 from, i was really pleased and if you spend £50 (i think) postage is free and it came within a copule of days. Sorry i can't remember the name at the moment.
