How long can a gold fish live with out any food?
ryukingirl793
I've heard you can slowly tone down their food supply for when u go on vacation and they can live for weeks. I suppose they can live for about a week usually cause treatment in many cases involves starving them for 3 days. biggrin.gif

Leo they can go a few days. How many I am not sure. I wouldn't go past 4-5 at the most. I do know breeders will usually fast a fish a couple days before shipping to unsure less waste in the travel bags. Do you ask for a reason, or just to know?

They can definately be fine without feeding them for 10 days, so long as there is weed in the tank. I was away for 3 days, and rather than risk an over feed with a holiday feeder, I choose not to feed them and leave just weed in tank. Unfortunately I couldnt return to my fish due to car breaking down, was worried sick.....and it was 10 days before I got home to them. They were all fine, and had eaten the weed. Not something to make a habit of, but they were fine fit and well.

I have gone on business trips where my fish goes without food for 7 days. They are fine.

Yes, about 10 days and that is according to Rick Hess the goldfish expert. But I agree with others about having some plants for them to nibble on.

Mine love to nibble on the algae that I have let grow on the back wall. laugh.gif

It depends on the temperature as a previous poster mentioned. In low temperatures (under 50 f.), they can go for months and you shouldn't feed them when the temp drops below 50 since their metabolism slows down so much the food can rot in their gut. My pond fish go from about Christmas until around mid-March or so without food. The funny thing is, they are still pooping after a three month fast. There are no plants or algae in the tubs, so they are definitely not eating, either. Also, they don't look any thinner, and the fry are actually larger even without eating. Go figure.

As for tank fish at room temperatures, I would agree that about a week or so would be OK. I don't get a fish sitter for a long weekend, but I do if I am going to be away longer than 3-4 days.

I don't really know if the question should be "how long can a goldfish live without food", but rather "how long is it healthy for a goldfish to be without food?" under normal acquarium circumstances.

I mean people can live a week without food, but is it good for them?

Goldfish can last for a few weeks, because they eat algae and other really small particles and stuff. but they will become thinner.
