There were around 150 at the beginning, but for some weird reason they kept dying, a few every day. I am thinking that the water hyacinth that I put in there from the pond might have carried something. Quite a few got culled out as well, since they had obvious spine deformities.
I have 10 left from this first batch, and they look like little mini fish. No deformities on those guys, and they are around 3/4 inch to 1 inch big now. As food I switched from the microworms and hatched brine shrimp to crumbled gel food, as well as cut up bloodworms, daphnia and adult brine shrimp. On the two biggest ones I can see the scales and everything like an adult fish, just really tiny. The others have scales at some places, while other places still look like the "glass fish" effect....
I got a second batch of that same shubunkin pair on Saturday morning, and yesterday the fry hatched. Counting so far roughly 100, and this time there aren't any plants in that tank whatsoever, just the sponge filter and an airstone. They started eating their microworms today, and the brine shrimp hatchery is up and running again. I'll add 1 tsp of salt per gl of water tomorrow, just to be on the safe side, and it is a good thing for the brine shrimp as well.
So, thats it for now. As for the ranchu, oranda, wakin and ryukin, they are getting fatter and fatter, but don't seem to have a clue what spawning is. I guess their parents didn't have "the talk" with them!
