In the human world, we put obvious labels on everything. Ie, Caution: Contents are hot. on a coffee cup. So why can't the fish medicine people label their medicine?!

My calico oranda is having tail problems. [That will be another post in this section, probably tomorrow afternoon/evening -- I must first test the water, and get some good pictures of the tail problems -- it's a rot/tear problem that is coming out of nowhere.] I know what do with this -- Melafix!

4 or 5 days later, I'm not seeing much improvement. Don't know if it's worse, but it ain't better, either. I stop and think. Grab my DrFostersandSmith catalogue. Flip to the page with the Melafix. And there's a box -- the active compounds can break down if left exposed to UV/direct sunlight. Store away from light.

And my Melafix bottle's been out on top of the tank for the last week. No wonder the tank doesn't smell like mint!

Needless to say, I went out, bought a new bottle, and chucked the old one. I think I am going to cut the box from the catalogue, and tape it on the bottle, just to remind myself.

Anyone else noticed this before?

I've never had a bottle of it actually go bad on me, although it does turn opaque if it's been stored for along time (still does the job though).

Mind you, Melafix is not something I'd use for finrot anyway; it is very good at helping to heal torn tissue but not much good at clearing real bacterial infections, which are often the root cause of finrot. Plus it doens't deal with secondary infections, such as fungus. Personally, I salt the tank to 0.3%to treat finrot as this actively tackles the root infection and stops any secondary infections occurring. Once the fins are healing, I do a large water change to remove half to 2/3rds of the salt and then I add Melafix to speed tissue repairs. smile.gif

Well said Emmahj!

Actually I did know about the warning though, and the bottle itself does say it will turn opague if exposed to heat...

Mela in itself is controversial. However, I have used it, but was forwarned it was not as great as touted. I liken it to neo-sporin. Clean & disinfect the wound, apply the neo etc....

Mind you, if caught quickly, it will help out with the cloudy eye though. And one can use it in conjunction with salt! smile.gif No harm to the filters and bio bugs.

thats just my twocents.gif biggrin.gif
