just another question..when does fish food (flakes, pellets, ..) expire provided that it is kept closed in a cool, dry place? I've heard anywhere from 3 months to a year.

I would say between 3-6 months depending on storage. I do know "bad" or expired food can cause major health problems. So I wouldn't take a chance.
