I heard spirulina flakes are beneficial for goldfish and also that it can be harmful if fed too much. How much is too much?
Thanks,

not really i tried a hard spirulina diet with less protein, no problems, except that the GFs can start slowing down a bit and tends to constipate bit more but not significant.

I feed my goldies spirulina pellets everyday (along with mini stix and frozen bloodworms) and I've had no problems. They love them and are super active and it makes them turn colors (Pandas). I use the sinking pellets by Ginger Aquatics. Yum-Yum!!

mookie, careful, those beta carotene may lower one color of your pandas when there's an excess

I feed mine spirulina just 1 or 2 times a week. Pro-gold and veg variety the other times. I fed them bananas for the 1st time tonight and they gobbled it up!

Thanks Maniacholic, but at this time I don't have any Pandas.

hi, i have been feeding sinking granules with spirulina every day for the past few months and everything is fine. a commet changed colors and my black moore is looking a bit gold on his underbelly, but other than that > > nothing. i don't like the color enhancing stuff, but one of my ryukins had chronic sbd and i switched to a sinking food and he recovered and this food is the only one i can find around here that sinks.
what is it that can go wrong when feeding spirulina all the time?

I would also like to know if there are any dangers with feeding spirulina as the main diet. I have a fish with a pretty bad SBD problem and I've tried many different types of food. Different brands of flakes, granules, pellets, wholefoods (peas, seaweed, carrots, etc.), and even homeade gel food. The only thing that doesn't make him float either on his side or do tumbles when he swims is these spirulina flakes that I've been feeding him.
So please if there are any dangers, someone let us know!

anyone have anything else to add to the spirulina discussion?
Just wondering cause my fish is still eating it twice a day for nearly 2 months now. Hope it's not bad for him.

spirulina has no problems when not accounting that the fish may poop a bit more and get the water dirty a BIT more insy winsy bit, but that's from a daily or perhaps bi-daily feeding

With nothingelse? I think it might be good to mix the food up, like twice week a different kind. Have you tried peas / rice?

I haven't tried rice yet. I think I will. But peas are easier to give than rice unless I'm having it for dinner that night

So maybe once or twice a week I'll add a few peas to his diet. I really don't want to do anything to mess him up. Cause he's been doing wonderful compared to before on this food.
Thanks for the advice.
