I have a lot of green junk in my goldfish's tank, so I was thinking about getting a snail. (This green junk gets on the walls, and it's on the rocks at the bottom) It's a 10 gallon tank that has 2 fantail (I think) goldfish.

Would a snail be a good addition? What would I have to do to keep it alive?

I have 9 snails and they clean them well becuase they will get all of that of becuase it is most likely algae!!!! See if your local fish store has any algae eating snails or just get an apple snail becuase then you do not have to feed them becuse they will eat that stuff!!! I hope i was some help!!!!!

I have had many snails and I did not find that they did much to clear the algae out of my tank. Even with snails, you're still going to have to scrape the algae off of the walls every 2 or 3 water changes. They only clear a small amount which is hardly noticeable (IMO). smile.gif

Just for the records, most people that buy Apple Snails for algae eating, are sadly disappointed.Either the snail starves to death and dies,or it lives on what-ever you may feed your fish. Not all Snails eat algae.Apple snails need vegetables in their diet,& Algae just doesn't cover that. smile.gif You may want to look into buying a bigger tank, and getting a Bristlenose. They actually enjoy eating the algae----- biggrin.gif

For the majority of snails, they only eat algae if they are forced to. Think of it this way- if you were starving, would you eat dog food? Probably.. but that's the same as it is with most Apple Snails and algae.

I had a whole lot of algae, and I have a couple hundred snails.. mostly babies, but there you have it. I bought an algae scrubber for $2 and now I have no more algae. smile.gif It's the simplest thing to do in my mind.

My sister got a Snail..... The most this did in her tank was leave a slimy Trail cross the tank and she still continued to get build up......I found out when I had a 10 gallon tank that I did not get the major build up for quite some time we are talking a month or so.......I eventually cleaned my tank....got a better filter and I got a new tank buddie for my goldies....A pocostomus...(spellin may be an issue for this wonderfull little creature)

Al my,...my pocostomus not only cleans the sides of the tank but he also feeds on the food that you feed your fish.......They do well for themselves....I now have a larger tank, Al has two new buddies of his kind and they seemed to be doing ok yeah.gif

The only thing I might add in at this point is, as far as a pleco is concerened, if you get one of those, make it sure it is not a common pleco, they don't mix with Goldies.
