My snail hasn't moved in about a week...he is completely in his shell, his door is all the way in as well (even beyond the shell actually) and he hasn't moved at all...he is on top of the little castle in the tank, and before that, he was just on the bottom of the tank and hadn't moved for a long time there either. I'm not sure what to do in this situation

are you sure hes not moving at all, like during the night or something?
does he smell stinky??
the same thing happened to my snails....not sure what to tell you.
try testing your water for copper, metals, and all that fancy stuff...maybe a fish place could do it for you if you dont have the kits...thats what Donya told me to do when my snails were dying.
sorry to hear it!

nope, he's not moving at all..he's been in the same spot and same position for a week now...the only test i have other than ammonia, nitrate, ph, etc...is gh and kh, both of which are a little bit low. I added a drop or two of liquid calcium because i noticed spots on his shell that were damaged, do you think that could be what is wrong?

That is extremely weird. Although, I have had snails not move for days at a time, at least I didn't see them move at all. Usually if the snail is dead and has been on the bottom of the tank for a week, it will have fallen out of it's shell by now. Have you taken the snail out of the water at all and poked it or anything?

no, i'm afraid to move him because i don't want to bother him...but i will check him out today...he has gone a few days at a time without moving before, but this time it is way longer.

Grain, take him out and smell. A dead smell has a not so pretty odor to it, like rotten eggs....

Mar 24 2005, 04:22 PM
all I can tell you to do is sniff him...your answers will be right there....watch, though...if hes really dead...he may just tumble out of his shell...and you'll have a pile of dead boogers on your floor, tank, etc...eek

awww...sorry to hear that!
the only thing that comes to mind is water params....do you feed him or does he just eat algae?
grain
Mar 24 2005, 07:33 PM
the water params were all good...we fed him too...he didn't really like to eat algae as much as he liked to eat food...but yeah, he loved cucumbers, and lettuce and fish food as well.

awww...I have no clue why he died then....Poor thing...mine all went mysteriously like that too....
just curious...what kind of snail was he?
grain
Mar 24 2005, 07:47 PM
a mystery snail...or apple snail (are those the same thing?)
smack536
Mar 24 2005, 07:51 PM
brig or cana?(mystery snails and apple snails are basically the same thing)
just curious, cuz all my brigs died mysteriously just the same way you said yours went...but my canas were totally uneffected

Sorry to hear about your snails.

I also lost one of my mystery snails too. He went inside a piece of drift wood and just never came back out. Sure enough, when we found him he was dead.

I know alot of people on here dont like it, but I swear by stress coat in my tanks with snails....I never had a snail survive more then a week or two before I switched to using it...might be an experiment....
dont give up on snails!!!! theyre too much fun once you get a good healthy one!

i do use stress coat. actually, we had this snail for almost a year (give or take, i can't remember exactly) he was great up until the past month. I thought maybe he was just old...but i've seen some snails that are like twice as big as this one, so he must have not been that old. He lasted longer than any of my past snails though.

brigs typically only do live a year or 2, and only get about half the size of the the giant ones here....mabye he was just an old man...or lady...
grain
Mar 28 2005, 04:16 PM
ok, i don't feel so bad now. I think he was probably just old and it was his time. I was worried that i did something wrong, but judging by his size when we got him, and how long we had him, he was about 2 years old.
