Full Version: By-pass Mechanical Filter

Now I've got it up and running and it seems to be working exactly how it's supposed to, I thought I'd share this with you.

I've just added one of these to my filter system. It goes between the canister filter and the intake so it catches all the big gunk before it gets to the canister and dirties it up.

And the best part? It's a by-pass, so you simply turn the black top 90º and you can remove the bottom to clean/replace the cartridge - without having to turn your filtration off! The water just travels straight through the blue top instead of through the filter.

And then when you re-attach it, you simply turn the top back to 'filter' and off you go.

You can use lots of types of filtration in it. I chose pleated paper cartridges at 50microns (so it catches the heavy stuff but doesn't interfere too much with the water flow), so nothing bigger than that gets through to the canister to muck it up with gunk now. You can go down to 10 microns to catch even the smallest gunk if you want.

So now I can just clean the the gunk out of this by-pass once a week and the canister can stay clean and working as a bio filter for ages (or so goes the theory). I've only had it for one week, but it's amazing how much muck it's already captured.

The water passes down the sides and then through the paper cartridge and flows back up the middle and out. It's a clear container, so you can see how dirty it is getting as the muck is caught on the outside of the cartridge. Very helpful to let you know when it needs to be cleaned.

For those interested, the filter cost was approx US $22, the paper cartridge is $9 (which is cleanable and re-usable).

PS. It comes with two 3/4 inch screw-in hose adaptors, but you can buy separate ones to match your own tubing system sizes exactly if you want.

PPS. You can also buy separate plastic internal containers to hold other type of filter media in it like charcoal for instance, so you can use it to filter anything you want! I guess you could even use it as a bio filter as well. Have three of them in a row (mech, bio & chem) with a strong pump and you probably wouldn't even need the canister filter! smile.gif

Where did you purchase it?

I got mine from aquaticeco.com, but I'd guess you could get them from any local pond equipment supplier (as opposed to a local pet shop or aquarium).

I believe cartridge filters are pretty common equipment, but this one is different in that it has the by-pass feature which makes it so much easier to replace or clean the cartridge. The label says it's made in Italy.

Thats a cool addition, Awrieger, and AquaticEcosystems is a great place to shop for anything fishy. I wonder if that By-pass filter can also be put on the intake tubes of the aquaclear, or just the canister filters??? unsure.gif
Ain't it grand that such a great place is only 45 minutes away from me. I think another trip is in order, I need a pond vaccuum and a few sponge filters as well....happydance.gif

Lucky you, Andrea! smile.gif No such place near me unfortunately, so I have to order from America! sad.gif

Well, the theory of being able to clean the paper cartridges and re-use them sounded good, but now I have a dirty one, I have no idea how to clean it! Just rinsing it doesn't work at all. Help!

The cartidge is made out of paper??? How about just replacing it with ordinary filter floss?

wow that looks really cool

That looks similar to the magnum filters, indeed, if it is, I soak mine overnight in bleach solution and then rinse it well until there's no bleach smell left. tapping it with smart smacks (rubber ends) against the edge of the sink also dislodges more of the gunk. I also use the hose and full force to blow out some as well.

Hope this helps! smile.gif

interesting!

what u mean by "big gunk"?
fish poop or plant leaves? how big is big? smile.gif

Sonni, I thought it was really cool too! Until I actually tried to clean the paper filter! Actually, I think I can leave it in there for longer than just a week. Maybe even for a month or more before replacing/cleaning it...

Indeed it is, but not so wide (I think). Thanks for the tips, Kathy! I thought about bleaching it, but wasn't sure. I'll definitely try that now.

Andrea, it's sort of stiff processed/plasticky paper so it doesn't just go all limp and soggy! The paper is only on the outside, it has a perforated cylinder down the middle for the return water flow and a plastic tip at each end to hold it all together, so I don't know if just using floss would work.

Kflynt, by big gunk I mean everything solid (including waste etc) that can be seen with the naked eye right down to 50 microns in size. Nothing bigger than that can get through.

whats wrong with the paper filter?

wouldnt that cut off some gallons/hour from the filter??

i already have a uv sterilizer attached to my cannister... blink.gif
