My mom got me a pleco today as an Easter present, but I am not sure what kind it is. She said the lady in the pet shop just called it a pleco. I am thinking it might be a common pleco, but am hoping that I'm wrong since I know they get HUGE and starting eating on GFs. Any way, here are some pics of the little guy, about 1 1/2 iches right now and in a quarentine tank. These pics are kinda big so they may take some time to load. Now if this is a common pleco what should I do?? keep him for a bit and see how things go or just take him back right way and try to get something else? What I really want is a bristlenosed pleco since they stay small and and great at algea clean up, which is what I really need for my tank.

Yep, I'm afraid that your assumptions are correct. That is indeed a common pleco and whatever you do, don't keep him with your goldies. He might be small, but they do get big (as you have heard).

Yes, Thank your mother profusely for the thought and see if she can take you to get a bristlnose as you are wanting. It might be a couple of dollors more and you might have to wait to find one, but it will definitely be worth it! biggrin.gif

Good luck!

I agree with Paul. Common plecos are cute when they are small, but they get very big. I had one for years and I finally had to devote an entire tank to him. Eventually I found an aquarium maintenance shop that took him for a large commercial aquarium.

I now only have bristlenoses and I think they are great fish. Well worth the extra money biggrin.gif

BTW, if your local store doesn't have them in stock, ask if you can order one. That is what I had to do to get my second bristlenose.

Darn, I was hoping I was wrong about the little guy, oh well. Thanks for the replies. I will try calling the store tomorrow to see if they will take it back, and if they have a bristlenose or, if like you suggested touchof sky, they can get one in for me.

You may also want to see if your lfs has rubberlip plecos which my lfs often carry although I have never seen a bristlenose pleco.
