Hi all,

I have 3 rainbow fish in a ten gallon getting really big. Was wondering if I could put them in with 2 goldfish in a 30 gal. long tank.

I would say no, arn't rainbow fish tropical?, and anyway i think
you should save the extra room for the goldfish when they grow....

Actually, Alex, Rainbowfish have the capacity to make wonderful tankmates for fancy goldfish. biggrin.gif

But, and I stress this, You have to set the tank up as you would for tropicals:

Temp ranges are between 72 and 82

Likes hard medium hard water

Needs plants and cover for safety

Omnivorous, like goldfish

They do much better in schools of 4 or more

All in all, these guys make great additions to most any community tank, goldfish tank and the like. They are very active fish.

Other than that, treat them as you would goldfish. But remember, they too add to the bio-load so you can count 4-6 rainbowfish as one goldfish in the ten gallon per fish rule of thumb. wink.gif

Hope this helps! smile.gif

Good info, Paul. I have looked at some of the various rainbowfish, but haven't bought any yet.

Thanks guys for answering my post.

Toothless, Can I mix and match rainbows and will the different varieties of them school together? I only have three should I buy more?
Can I feed them what I feed the goldfish or do I need to feed tropical food?

Sorry for all of the question. smile.gif

BTW: The two fish in the 30 is an orange oranda and a shub. The temperature of the tank is 76 degrees. Anthing else I need to know. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I'm going to try this again. My post seems to keep disappearing. Is it my computer or the sight? One minute my post is there the next minute it is not.
My question was will rainbow fish eat the same thing as goldfish or would I have to feed them tropical food? sorry if this question was already answered but I can't see if it was.

I'll try to help you.

Like goldfish, rainbow fish like a vegetable component to their diet, so I would think they could eat the same diet as the goldfish.

You should keep rainbow fish in groups of 3 or more biggrin.gif

Great advice from Touchofsky. exactly.gif

Groups of 3 are great for them, groups of 5 or more is optimal. And yes, different subspecies of rainbows will school together. One thing about Rainbows is that they sometimes show aggression to each other (male to male) . But don't worry one bit, their aggression is little more than flaring their fins at each other and whatnot....

Yes, you can feed them exactly what you normally feed your goldfish, A large portion of their diet needs to be vegetable matter but they will always appreciate bloodworms, brine shrimp, peas, and all that jazz.

So, any chance of a pic of them? huh.gif

Thanks touchofsky and toothless for answering my post again. I will put the rainbows in tonight and see what happens. and yes I've noticed agression from two to the rainbows, I guess I have 2 males and one female. The colors on two of them are brighter than the one fish is more dull.
Sorry toothless, but I don't have a digicam yet but am saving for one. I love seeing pics of everyones fishies and can't wait to show mine off. Soon I hope. smile.gif
