Lozbug, just keeps getting nicer and nicer. Love the swing bench. It's going to be a little sanctuary when all the plants start growing and you have fish in the pond. I'm so happy for you, doing such a great job. I'm enjoying your pictures.

thank you all so much, i feel a bit sad now the majority of work is done... but it is one of those things i can always add to. so good.

plan on adding fish in next 3 weeks or so, and assuming all my tests come up clear

i am looking forward to seeing it when the plants are blooming

the bench had a green fabric roof supplied but i decided to put trellis (sp) up the sides and across the top instead so the clematis can grow up it and be beautiful

i will probably add photos every weekend - even if i do no work out there - just so i can record the progress of it all.
Thanks again

Don't feel sad! Now you can enjoy your work! You can sit down and look at it and just take it easy! I would!
Oh, I can't wait for the snow to melt so I can sit by our pond and look at the fishies swimming around... !

i think im inlove. my goodness.... Loz, how MUCH is this? must be very expensive huh? mind telling me how much everything costed? man oh man that pond is great, and how did the water turn green?
Lozbug
Mar 27 2005, 01:14 PM
cost wise the pond itself (liner, pump, digger, filter, stones, gravel, plants) approx £600 if you add in plants on rockery, bench, more stones, more gravel, wood chips.. getting close to £800 - i have been saving for about 7 months. the ideas came about september 2004.
pond got muddy from garden soil that has fallen in when digging, but i was reading today in 'mail on sunday', that new ponds do stay murky for the first year or so.. but you can add barly straw to help clear it faster.
As long as the water tests come up ok then i will add fih in about 3 weeks as it is fine for fish to be in murky pond, i read somewhere that koi preffer it and the only reason ponds are clear is so we can look in em'
Raith
Mar 27 2005, 02:38 PM
murky waters is okay as long as if its safe to the GF/koi[whatever to your likings of course]. wow, saving for 7months, did you need a permit to dig up that part of the lawn and start the pond? its beautiful... i wonder how many GF can fit in it properly.

Wow, Loz, what a beautiful spot you created for you! I love it the way it turned out. That is truely something to be very proud of.
It's gonna look even more awesome when the plants are taking off in the summer!

Oh wow! Loz! This is just SO amazing, and I can just imagine how 'chilled' you will be on a summer's evening, when you are on that swing bench, overlooking your pond and gazing out over the fields!!!
It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL
I have really enjoyed following the progress of your pond and hope you will carry on updating us with pics, it's almost like being part of it all.
Thanks for sharing!

Mar 28 2005, 09:40 AM
Thanks guys, no didn’t need a permit, the land is privately owned so is ok. do need to get electrician to check over it all, that is also why i am waiting few weeks before getting fish... soon as he says its ok... the cables can all be fixed down and buried.
I can’t wait for summer... i can see me now on the bench with glass of wine watching the sunset

few more ideas have now evolved... next to swing on left am gunna dig a shallow (up to 10" deep) to create a aquatic plant nursery, podded_pea has been helping me with the ideas on that. If you sit on bench and look to the left the fallen down chicken coop will become the decking.

Here some picts from today as we got a few more plants ..

oh my gosh, it looks prettier each time i step into this thread.
the waterfall is the prettiest thing ive ever seen.
oh, and does the pond need like a steady stream to get rid of the dirty water? how does that work?
Lozbug
Mar 28 2005, 12:59 PM
Thanks!, well the reason for the stream.... the pump obviously takes the water up to filter then the filter returns it to pond... I didn’t want a big green box right next to the pond, so i put it as far back as i could so eventually it will be hidden by plants, the waterfall was going to be much, much smaller but as i had a fair bit of excess liner i thought i would have a mini stream instead and the water flow helps oxygenate the water too.

(and sounds really nice!!

)

Loz, I have been watching your progress and your pond has turned out just wonderfully. This really hasn't taken you long to set up. It looks realy great!!!!

one of our dogs "cracker" has got a bit close, but the others just wonder by it... not sure how they will react when they see the fish... i'm sure they will loose interest though.

Since i had been thinking about it since september.. i decided when it was started, that was it.. i would do it all a soon as possible.

Will you be able to keep the fish out in the winter?
Lozbug
Apr 2 2005, 12:41 PM
should be able too as it 1 meter deep, we tend to have mild winters, and it shouldnt freeze as the water will be moving and i have got a tetrapond winter island to put in, it is a floating heater that doubles up as a bird bath

Lozbug

when/if it rains to much then it will just overflow...it will run of into lawn... but we dont get heavy down pours, we couldnt think of anything else, nothing suggested in my books either.

is that behind the bench? I've been wondering all the time, I've never seen anything like it!

Sorry, i totally missed this question!

it is a Nissen Hut
Nissen Huts had all kinds of uses, from stores to accommodation and from offices to NAAFI establishments. Our is just filled with junk from when we moved here - about 17 years ago, old boxes which have all got damp and rotted, trouble is it is made from asbestos so we cant knock it down unless we pay a professional to do so. (And i expect we would have to go on "holiday" while they did it as it poisonous?!?)

Loz
EDIT: *think* it was built in like WWII time? when i was littel i thought it was a bomb shelter

best of luck. ive seen it several times, the guy had to put cement on his pond err, pool, to get rid of the ducks, they kept coming up until the fourth year! that year, the owner decided to put cement. ducks still come once in awhile... but no water for them to chill in.

LOZBUG
I dug one by hand two years ago. It was lots of fun. Wish I knew where you lived. I have so many plants, some that I got from the wetlands in Minn, while on a trip to that area. I dug some lily plants. They are wonderful and live through the winter. I would share, if I could figure out how to send them to someone. My pond was such a job to all of us. We sit there and feed the koi and goldfish. The only problem with gold fish, they will multiply alot in a pond, I had loads of babies, last year. Then these babies will have babies wow, after a few years they will outnumber and tak over the koi, so I have been told. Want some goldfish for your pond?? Oh by the way we are in Georgia, so if you nearby NC and North Georgia, come and by and dig up some plants. Good luck, you will enjoy your pond. I will post some pictures of our pond, if I can figure out how to do that. Good luck femmeartist51 alias Lynda

Hi Lozbug,
I am so addicted to my pond, that I am digging another one. Well this one is taking alot longer to dig. All the rain and such. When you get your koi in the pond, I found this great product. Calcium Benonite. It gives the fish all the minerals they need. If you ever get onto ebay there is a guy who explains what this can do for the fish. I stopped by the pond place in the next town, he says even us humans can take it once a day. It is great stuff. I also picked up a female koi. The boys in the pond are hanging around her. I will post some pictures using photobucket. My hubby has been in the pond doing it's spring cleaning, I think he almost hates the pond today, haha. But I loved seeing your pictures. Take care and ejoy your pond. Wish you where closer, I have to dig out some of our pond plants. Take care Lynda

Hi again Lozbug,
I don't think koi are harder to keep. Ours live through our winters around here, and have been doing ok. They have tripled in size. They eat the same as goldfish, just don't give them corn. Try some koi, I think you will like them. Again, take care and enjoy your pond. Lynda
