Yes they are....Their common name is Zebra Apple Snail

Apple Snails are from th Ampullariidae family.In that family ,they are divided into several classes.These snails are from the Asolene group. They're called Apple Snail "Asolene Spixi's".Cool aren't they?

I have read up on apples but had never heard of that species. Very cool!

Size ----The full size adults are in my hand in that one pic,so they're smaller than both Brig's & Cana's. Eating plants,they're more like Brigs than Cana's.They will nibble,but from what I read,they don't do massive injury to your plants.I have seen mine on veggies,and so far,they've left the plants alone. js....From what I understand,the Spixi's are still pretty new to the States. I don't recall seeing them mentioned when I first began searching for apple snail info either. I think they're going to be one of my fav's! They're so pretty in person.

They were just recently imported from a snail seller in Germany. I don't remember how recently.. maybe.. 6 months-ish. But they are very new to the States, yes.

How neat! I've been semi working on the 20 gl, finally figured out just what I could put in it without messing with the water chemistry! Low level light plants mostly, but I have it in front of the window too, so some moderate to the back and I have a perfect place for White Clouds and Emporer Tetras.

since they are stream fish, the new p-200 should be fine, and they can all take ph up to 8, so I can still have snaily's in tank! Whoooohooooo!

OMG.......I just found Spixi Eggs!!!!!They couldn't lay them on a plant,they had to lay them on the aquarium glass! I'm sure that someone's going to eat them. I have three Breeder Nets all being used right now-baby cory's,baby brigs,and cory eggs in the third. Yikes...I gotta figure out what to do here!!! By the way,they are so cool looking! I took a pic,but it was kind of dark-hopefully they'll be there in the morning!

Lucky! Hey, you should try to use a hairnet. That's what I did for my Brig clutches (ok.. I know it's different), I stuck them in a hairnet and ducktaped it to the side so they're sitting above the water. I dunno if it'll work for Spixi eggs though.

That's a good idea to consider for my Brigs.Spixi's gotta be in the water though.I also think that if I used that idea for them,that the other snails would soon find them,and eat them thru the netting. If I get any to hatch Airwen,I'll definately send you one!

Poor Cracker , Gabriel discovered him right off when I moved them from QT to the big tank! She nudged him about like a soccer ball for a bit. It was kinda funny, but I suppose he felt like someone had stuffed him in a garbage can and rolled him downhill........

She's decided he isn't a piece of orange now though!

Cracker is one of my two baby gold briggs. the other one is Snack! My son made a silly remark about escargot and when I asked him if he knew what kind of snails, of course he didn't have a clue. So being the smart alec I am, I quietly informed him that he would never go hungry and that there was snack & cracker!

Needless to say, for once I got the better of my son, he sort of got a funny look and color on his face and went quiet for a bit! Sort of green colored I think it was...

Cracker's shell has a bit of ledge to it, makes it look cracked, so the names stuck!

Actually no...Woodle,Snips&Snails, & SHannon(Ijedic)...I'm trying to control myself here........I will eventually try Ang for sure!

The second batch hatched yesterday,or maybe looking at the time two days ago! I thought brigs were small! My first batch either is a dud,or something,cause they still haven't hatched yet.Right now,I have three batches of eggs in the tank...I'm letting mother Nature do her thing...I'm running out of snail room!

Wow, Sharon, with all those different kinds of snails in your house, how do you house them? All in one tank, or each species gets their own tank? I wonder how the breeding goes if they all mix and match in the same tank....
Can I kindly ask if you could sell me one of those Spixi's as well? I don't mind paying for them of course...

Right now,I have them in a couple tanks-all species...I eventually want to do boy/girl so I can be in charge of whom is breeding with who. That way,I have some "Color control" Maybe anyway! As soon as those little guys grow big enough,I'll send you a few!

Barbara (Woodle) is really nice to work with, I haven't tried the others out yet. Another good source is Maria (Mariastuff, I think). She sells homemade snail buiscuits and other goodies as well.

Devs my goodness you have got to have at least 50 snails by now!! How are they all doing? Are you into breeding them now? And what on earth I you doing with them.

Because people are soooooo generous Laurie,I have about 150 Brigs!!!! That's not counting the babies!!!!!
