Natural Habitat of Goldfish
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello and happy new year to all smile.gif

What is the natural habitat of the goldfish like? Can they still be found in their natural habitat or are the goldfish of today now just domesticated pets? I'm very curious about this.

Thanks,

Goldie

This is something I have been very interested in too....unfortunately I don't know very much about it but here's what I do know. Goldfish are descendents of a type of carp, you can really see the resemblance in ones like commons. The fancies were bred to be the way they are so I don't think they exist in the wild. As far as ones like koi and comets I really don't know and would definitely like to hear more about the subject.

Well, Ive seen wild carp around here and actually out in the rivers in deserts of Arizona and CA. The rivers were very fast moving, with live plants on either side, and some rocks but mostly sandy bottoms. Im sure theyre in lots of other places too, but it strikes me as funny that they can tolerate such high temperatures, being that theyre coolwater fish. So I try to make my tanks as much like those rivers as possible, with river rocks and strong currents and lots of live plants.

Ive also heard there are wild goldfish, descendants of freed pet fish, living in rivers up in the northern US.

Does anyone have any information about the history/breeding of fancy goldfish. What was the actual first fancy species to be bred?

In 1368-1644 Ming Dynasty Twin tails, Absense of the dorsal fin and the globe eyes were founded.

1956 Chen Dynasty the Black, blue and the purple coloring came in as well as the Loin heads, Orandas, Celestial, Bubble eyes, Pompons, and Pearscales.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that info Koko, I didn't know the twin tails thing was so long ago, and then there's a bit of a gap until breeding of the different types. Do you know of any books about the history of the breeds, I'd love to see some early pics/photos.

I think the original habitat of the Crucian carp or common goldfish is the cool, running rivers and streams of Asia. That's probably why they need so much filtration. The rivers used to wash away all that poop and ammonia.

I have noticed that when I turn off my filters and airstones to clean the tanks, the fish look bewildered and sad. I think they are used to having all that flowing water around them.

Best wishes,
Kiko

It says somewhere in Rick's book that they're found in the lakes, streams, ponds and some rivers of Japan and China. I've seen a few pictures of chinese women in boats in goldfish ponds, feeding the koi. They swarm and it looks so cool! I have to imagine that if one were to order the breeds, they'd go from the first being shaped similar to commets and commons, then they got rounder, fatter, and lost a few fins. Phoenix goldfish are a fairly recent breed and so I won't buy one because it'll take a while for Phoenix's to gain some heartyness.

My five little goldfish, Hiroshi the big fat dominant oranda, Agnes, the small little red cap, Dolores the hefty moor, Kenshi the big red cap, and Mei Ling, the smaller shy moor. I love 'em all.

Well now that I think of it,

I live in Japan, and often go off base and look around.
It sounds disgusting, but in farmland runoff sewers,
there are HUGE gold carp. The sewers are open on top, and they are pretty much like man made rivers that flow through cities, to irragate other farms downland. The carp were like 2-3 feet long!!!!! Look just like huge orandas or comets...

Just a little misc info
