lol Arent u in canada? Its 4.99 canadian at my lfs. I think thats pretty fair, considering they arent great quality outrageous fish. This guy i know breeds them, just as a hobby, and he sells his for 25. Hes not out to make a profit, but his are healthy and garenteed, which is more then you can say for the ones in the lfs. So Id say no, you arent getting ripped off at all.

Here in Ontario, Canada, veiltails are around $5, and I have recently noticed crowntails in the lfs, and they are $10.

I've never even seen them in the uk, are they available here?

where do you live rachelm? i get males for about £5 and females for 3. suppose it depends where you live and if theres much competition in the area.
if you look in the individual tanks rachel you can usually spy a male betta in a corner. if they dont stock them you can always ask, my lfs has said if i want anything unusual like a crowntail then he will try and get them in, which i thought was nice but i think the price may be too high.

I live in Bath.

The lfs near me are quite small apart from one near bristol, i didn't see any bettas but wasn't really looking that hard so they might have them. Do they have any other names or are they just bettas?

Plus, and this is probably a really silly q, how do you tell the girls from the boys?

Usually the most common type are veiltail betta or siamese fighting fish.
The females will be together in a tank and are usually smaller with not very long finnage. The males are more flambouyant and have really long flowing fins, and will be alone in tanks.
Theres all different types of betta including crowntails, deltas and half moons, but they are rare in Britain.
And you can only keep one male per tank unless its sectioned. Bettas like small tanks to patrol and guard and prefer something around the 5 gallon size and need a heater in this country set at around 78,79f and maybe as high as 80-82f.
