I was planning to make gel food for the first time today and noticed the can of salmon that I bought has salt added to it. The can is 7.5 oz and the recipe uses 1/2 a can. Is it safe to use this?

Also, I have a bag of cooked salad shrimp in the freezer. It also contains salt and sodium tripolyphosphate (whatever this is! blink.gif ). Is this shrimp ok to feed my goldies?

I believe that salted food is not good for fish. Who else can comment on this?

It is harder to find unsalted canned salmon but not impossible. Trader Joe's sells unsalted canned tuna and may have unsalted salmon. Or a health food store would carry unsalted products for people on restricted diets.

many of the salt in canned foods like tuna, salmon, or sardines don't use synthetic salt and contains sea salt, which is safe.

I was looking for unsalted canned fish yesterday and found the tuna in spring water didn't have salt added, whereas tuna in oil did. I couldn't see unsalted salmon tho. This was in a supermarket so i will try a health food shop.

Has anyone used fresh fish in gel foods? Or does it go off too quickly.

uncooked fish can give off diseases to goldfish since they can share the same vunerability sad.gif

I just made gel food with canned salmon. I never thought about the salt, so I hope it's okay. The last I made was from regular canned tuna and it didn't seem to bother them. But, I'm guessing no salt would be better.
