I am a newbie who has an outdoor pond with one koi and 4 shubunkins. Last August I discovered I had had four babies! I now have them all indoors for the winter in a 100 gal. stocktank. The babies are growing however they are still not showing color (they are still black/gray). I had thought they should be showing some color by now. Will they get color or do I need to do something else?

Hi MN Fry, and

!
Are the babies pure goldfish, or are they a mix between the koi and the shubunkin? They indeed should show some coloring by now. There isn't really much that you can do, just wait it out. Once they are back in the pond, it can speed it up. Sunlight and the algae in the pond are the best things for put color on a fish.

I am not certain if they are a "mix" of koi and shubunkin. The female is shubunkin and believe my one koi and the other shubunkin are the same age so... I can't tell if they "look" like koi however 1 of the four is about 4" long while the other 3 are about 2" long. Could the koi and a shubunkin have fertilized the eggs?
I am feeding Tetra Sinking Mimi Sticks for ornamental goldfish. Is this an ok food?

Thanks for you input. This seems to be a great site. I just ran across it yesterday. I will continue to expect color and just be patient!

My baby comets are at least seven months old and still have no colour. They're in an outside pond.
