Full Version: My Moss Balls

HI all thought I would ask and see those of you who got the moss balls back last summer how they are doing?

Unfortunately mine are all gone. sad.gif They just couldn't keep their shape, I "rolled" them everyday and would "squeeze" them to help hold their shape and eventually they just turned into "strings" of bright green moss.
I was so disagppointed. But hey I loved them while they lasted.

Devs, Starsmom, how are yours????

That is weird. I had the ickiest moss balls - full of ants and half dead. But they are thriving - they are over 3 inches in diameter now. The one that I cut tons of dead matter from is now round and happy. (2 large balls and 4 baby balls)

One that I did not roll much, spawned "babies" and these are now the size of grapes - there are four grape sized balls rolling around in my guppie tank.

The moss ball that I put in a goldfish tank was torn apart in a frenzied game of soccer and disappeared into the filter. But the guppy tanks are ideal for them - they thrive and grow. They are very very green!

Isn't it strange, mine have mixed results too! Of course, the one in the goldie tanks - gone. lol.GIF Somehow I wasn't surprised at all.
One in the tropicals tank is doing fairly well, hasn't grown much, but still is round and not torn apart. No offspring though. There is another one in a planted goldie tank, and its so heavily protected by anacharis, that it can't even roll. It just sits there, looking pretty. I think I am gonna put that one into my guppy tank as well -only one half of the bottom has gravel, and the ball can roll around on the bare bottom side.
Daryl, tell us, what are you doing to those balls that they are doing so well, offspring and all? huh.gif

So now you tell me!!!!!! I put all mine in the goldie tank. I was down to one 3/4 of a ball.It actually seemed to be doing better. The goldies were pretty much leaving it alone. So I got comfortable,I felt okay leaving it.And then one day I walk past, and see Luna my chubby litttle Luna with the last part of the moss ball hanging out of her mouth. It was so funny, because when she saw me,she almost looked like the cartoon cats that eat the canary, and get busted when they cough and a feather pops pout of their mouth! rofl3.gif Hey Daryl,if you keep getting little baby balls, can you sell me a few? yeah.gif Now I have a guppy tank!

Devs I can just picture the cat. rofl3.gif "Sorry mom I couldn't resist it, you haven't fed us in 2 hours!".... lol.GIF

Daryl I am so glad yours is working out. I felt so bad for you and now you have the best ones of the bunch. Great for you!!!
I guess gf and moss balls don't go well together.......imagine that!!

Andrea maybe Carol can give you her secret to grow'em big and round!! ignore.gif

I do not know of any secret, per se. I let them roll around in the bottom of the tank - the one guppie tank has gravel and other plants and the other is more or less bare bottomed. I do not take them out and squeeze them or roll them or anything. I pretty much just threw them in there and ignored them!

The "babies" were pieces and chunks that came from the really mangled one that I had to cut tons of dead material from. I tried to mash the bits back on the ball - even wrapped it with string for a few weeks, but the bits kind of stuck out and made Mickey Mouse ears off the bigger ball, so I let them roll free and they have been growing ever since.

blink.gif I wish I did know a secret. I guess it is ignore them completely??

If mine make babies that are solid enough to trust that they will grow for you, I will be happy to send you ball babies! smile.gif
