he still eats a bit but not as much as it used to and then he goes back down and sit at the bottom

There's something wrong with it and I can't tell what.I just hope he makes it....

Cathy, can you get your hands on some medicated food, crush it up and feed it to him?
coyote ugly
Feb 27 2005, 07:13 PM
I am having a hard time looking for medicated food from where I am.At the time I am feeding them this.
Medi Super Gold
Flour
white fishmeal
dried soyabeans
cuttlefish meal
hematococcus
torula yeast
lactoferrin
astakisantine
SOD type enzymes
digestable enzymes
vitamins & minerals
I have done a 50% water change to see if he perks up but that didn't work either. Will it be okay to salt the tank 0.1% even if I have panda corys in there?
Thanks

I don't think I can help much. When my shubunkie sat on the bottom I asked FishGeeks (I didn't know you then). They said constipation, give him peas. I started to feed peas and now he (or the others) never sits on the bottom.
How is the fry doing today?
coyote ugly
Mar 1 2005, 04:56 AM
He's still pretty much the same...

I gave them all peas tonight. You may be right about him being constipated. His fins are not clamped so I hope it's nothing serious.Could it be stress from the water current?I used to have 2 whisper filters junior size in there and upgraded to a whisper 20 if I'm not mistaken.I hope he perks up soon.I'm going crazy worrying about them

The water current might bother him indeed. In the general discussion section is a thread started by Wyukin about the effects of water current on fish. Its pretty interesting to read. The title is "Is it possible?"
I would continue with the pea feedings, smushed up into small pieces. Salting can't hurt either, maybe you find and empty container for the cory's to be in for a while.

Our shubunkie didn't have clamped fins either. A couple of days with peas and he was as good as new.
I hope your fish will be up and swimming again soon.

Thanks Andrea

I kinda thought it was the current that's stressing him so I put it to low.I think there is less current now.I will continue feeding them peas and salt the tank and see how it goes

Thanks for your help

All of them are sitting at the bottom now...checked my water params and it hasn't changed a bit.I'm getting worried big time now :crp Do you think that they might have some internal infections or something?I feed them peas, pellets and flakes.I don't wanna lose them now.Any ideas?Thanks...

HOw much salt alltogether is in their tank now?
coyote ugly
Mar 3 2005, 03:18 PM
I salted it 0.1%.They are acting so weird

All this time whenever I go to look at them, they get excited and think it's feeding time.
But yesterday morning, when I turned on their light they were swimming like crazy trying to hide and have been sitting at the bottom all day.
This is all very sudden and I don't know why. They have no external injuries as far as I can tell.Thanks...

Something must have happened that caused this behavior of your fishies. But I don't know what. I'm so sorry I can't help you, but I know how it is. I worry about my fish constantly... even if they seem perfectly healthy!

It may still be related to the current, how long have you had the new filter? Did you keep your old filter material for the new filter?
Another thing, one of my tanks went freaked out for about 2 weeks, they would all bunch together and hide behind a plant. The only time they acted normally was at feeding time, they hated the light too so I stopped using it altogether.
I thought if I added some friendly fish they would all perk up, but the friendly fish instantly became spooked fish too. Eventually I moved the shyest fish to another tank, instantly he was Mr Happy again. Within an hour all the fish in the first tank were acting normally again.
I think they got scared one night when my husband had the DVD playing really loud for LOTRIII. Lots of loud explosions and flashes of light. The shyest fish stayed scared and the others just picked up his vibes, it's sort of survival instinct.
So maybe something has freaked them out - if it's possible try moving the shyest fry somewhere else and see what happens. I hope they are not sick.
Ranchugirl
Mar 4 2005, 03:42 AM
Good idea, Annette. Fish are funny creatures, and you can see this "follow the shyest fish" behavior even better in koi. One gets scared, and the whole bunch follows that one into hiding, even the friendliest koi.
I would leave the tank light off for now, or try try iluminate just a part of the tank, so they have one half darker.

Mar 4 2005, 03:49 AM
hmmmn, Koi
My shyest fish is actually in my signature, you can just see his head peeping out the back, he is either a common or a shubunkin - probably just a pretty common.
OldHag
Mar 4 2005, 04:48 AM
Yes, I thought so too. It can be something outside the tank.
Are the filter OK?
Do they eat alright?
We are concerned about your fishies!

Mar 4 2005, 03:46 PM
Thanks everyone for helping
I upgraded the filter about a month ago and I used the old media for about a week and they were doing just fine after that.
I was wondering if food has anything to do with this at all.I started feeding them tiny pellets(not crushed)about 2 weeks ago.
Their tank is in the living room next to the TV so maybe they don't appreciate the loudness of that too so I will move their tank in the dining room with all the others.
I haven't switch their light on today because I don't want them to be all freaked out again.
They all came out to eat this morning but the very first fry that was sitting at the bottom, was very weak. But it's progress that he came out to eat today
Thank you all so much...I really appreciate your help.

i heard that frys would sit on the bottom for a long time because theyre exhausted from getting out of the egg.

Three of them came out to eat this morning.I saw the other one at the back of a plant wiggling his pectoral fins like he wants to swim and can't lift his body

*sigh* I don't know what else to do..

Mar 5 2005, 07:49 PM
im still sure theyre exhausted. its still some progress since three came up to eat. just have clean water and filtration and enough air. can you take some pics of them?

I think those three look very good. Do they sit on the bottom often?
The weak one, is it hiding in the background at the bottom?
Is it the same one that was floaty before?
coyote ugly
Mar 6 2005, 02:15 AM
He's dying

and I can't help him.I saw the others picking on him so I separated him and put him in a breeder box.

I feel so bad

I don't think he'll make it till morning. This is really devastating after all the months that I've raised them from eggs.I hope the other 3 survive...

Oh the poor little baby, it's so sad. He's tummy looks awfully swollen.
coyote ugly
Mar 6 2005, 04:20 AM
yes,I noticed that too so I'm guessing it was the tiny pellets that caused this

maybe it made a blockage or something...I don't know
Fishmerised
Mar 6 2005, 04:41 AM
It may be swollen due to infection, so don't feel bad about the pellets. Life is so fragile and yet so robust, what a contradiction!
