Click to view attachmentAnother Apple Snail Species. "Asolene Spixi's"This is a beautiful snail.Their colors will get bolder as they get older.

They stay smaller than Brigs-lay their eggs under water, and will eat a plant at times.

I know that Blue Brigs are pretty common I guess around here, but I still love them!

Airwen,The guy on E-bay said Chestnut, but that's a tough call-seems most people end up having wild & not chestnuts. I want a chestnut really bad,so I hope it is.

Oh... chestnut is so relative.. it's used to describe an entire range of colors. I thought mine was chestnut, but it turned out to be an extremely rare Burgundy. Anyhow, mine looks like yours, from what I can tell. But.. I do not think yours is a wild.

Eventually,I will seperate the sexes.I want to definately keep the population of snails under control!

If I don't ,all colors will be breeding together, and god knows what color's I'll end up having. If I breed,it will be for specific color's.

What is a Pomacea Woodle?
Devs
Feb 24 2005, 09:05 PM

Woodle is the name the seller goes by on Aquabid. If you're on Apple Snail.Net,and you hear them talking about Salton Sea Snails, this lady Barb actually discovered this particular species.,hence the name Pomacea Woodles. If I'm not mistaken, they think it's maybe a cana that bred with an insularum? Not sure off hand. "Woodle" is also known for having spectacular snails and color's, I won a bid for her Brig's box of ten..She always adds extra goodies to her boxes too. Don't quote me on the story...I don't know that much about those snails, except that they get pretty darn big.

Yep, they get big and have thick shells. We are temporarily calling them "Pomacea Woodles". At the moment.. I'm not sure, but they think it's an entirely new species that developed in isolation in the tributaries of the Salton Sea near San Diego, CA. It seems to be related to Canas distantly.. that's about all I can remember off the top of my head.

How long are snails prgenant and when can they begin to breed to becuase i got 3 baby snails and they were already on top of each other? How you can tell if the snail is prgenant besides her stomach and what do their eggs look like and how long does it take the eggs to hatch?

Brigs can begin to breed at about walnut size. Snails aren't really "pregnant". I think that kind of implies a live birth, but with snails you can't tell. Females can store sperm for up to six months before laying eggs. I don't know what kind of snail you have, but Brigs (sorry, Pomacea bridgesii) lay their eggs in a pink mass above the waterline. Hatching depends on the conditions of the tank- mostly how warm and humid they are.. I think somewhere between 2 weeks and a month.. not sure on that however.

Thanks for sharing pics Sharon. I love your snail tank set up. The gravel looks like sand. Is there a reason why you use sand in your snail tank rather than gravel?
Is it hard to clean? I like the way it looks and might try it
Devs
Feb 27 2005, 08:11 AM

I just like the sand in the tanks, and as much as snails"freefall",I figured it would do them some good too!Sand has it's good and bad....If you "swish" the water around, what's laying on the bottom will float up into your vac .cleaner.It takes a while to get use to.I still suck up sand every once in a while. Every so often, you have to stir the sand around a bit to help keep Aeromona pockets from forming,or better yet,go and buy a few mt's

(Malaysian Trumpet Snails) They're great with sand.

how do mts help with stopping sand forming aeromona? and is aeromona the pockets of bad bacteria that can form?

The Trumpet Snails basically hide out in the sand during the day. They spend their time moving around eating what ever, constantly moving/turning sand, etc. Aeromonas can still form if you don't do routine gravel vac's,but the snails help that from happening. Aeromona's is the bad bacteria pockets that can form from waste etc.sitting in one place. They're really good(trumpet snails) especially when you have planted tanks, and you can't quite do that really thorough vac clean because of the plants.
