And such a surprise! We are planning on breeding our fish this year, and I have separated the fish by breed about 10 days ago. So, no more mix and match babies outside on the patio. They have been getting more food than usual, but there was a little "cold" spell before Valentines day, so I didn't think anything would happen.
Guess I was wrong! On Valentines day I was cleaning out the polyester fiber from my shubunkin tub, and when I looked at the fiber, I saw eggs all over!! And fertilized ones at that - I saw already eyes in almost every egg. So it must have been a few days like this, and I don't even wonna think how much the parents ate.

Took the fiber out and put it into a 10 gl tank with barely half the water in it, a heater and a cycled sponge filter, bubbling only very slowly. Hatching started Tuesday, and most of them are free swimming today, so they got their first meal of microworms and hatched brine shrimp. First count - around 150-200! I'll see if I can take a halfway decent picture, which isn't so easy with my camera.....

Congratulations! The babies must be soo sweet.

So do you know who the parents are or is this another mix-n-match lot? lol

Hope they do well,

Rachel, I have seen two of my shubunkins chase a few days earlier, so I suspect those two. And even if it was somebody else in that tub, it doesn't really matter, because they are all shubunkins. Thats the reason I separated my fish by breed - ranchu to ranchu, oranda to oranda, ryukin to ryukin, etc. So I don't get any telescope-oranda or wakin/ryukin crosses...lol.GIF
Whoever the parents are, the babies are either gonna be shubunkins or comets. Even with two true calicos breeding like shubunkins, only 50% are going to be calico. Strange, but true....smile.gif

And here we have the first picture....

Arrrr, so you were in time to separate them - i thought you meant they had nipped in first before you'd had time to smile.gif They are so tiny at the moment, bless smile.gif

Do you remeber what they looked like when they first hatched like 3-5 days after you got the eggs from the tank? PLease tell me you do becuase i would really like to have some baby goldfish? What color are they? Do you want them all becuase if not do you mind sending me some? I understand if you do not want to.

Dean, I don't remember exactly how they looked when they hatched - they were just there in the morning all of a sudden. I do know that they have a clear appearance with 2 little dots and a little something (probably the tiny spine) inside, thats how I knew they were fertilized. It would be neat if I could catch the next batch at the precise moment when they start hatching! happydance.gif

We wonna breed our fish to be sold to pet stores, but hey, I can spare a few to ship to whoever wants some. The parents are really pretty shubunkin. I think I have a picture of the female somewhere. I took her to a show mid January.....
