We don't have our black moor yet (for now, we are just getting 1...until we move out and can get a bigger tank) but I am wondering, how can we prevent swim bladder in our fish?

PetSmart does not have slow sinking pellets, so if I just soak them for 2 minutes or so, and then give the fish some peas, etc...is that ok?

Thanks for your help yet again smile.gif

The Petsmart I frequent has a sinking pellet called Bio-blend
by marineland. They make a couple different varities for
different fish. The big thing to keep the possibility of SBD
occuring is to vary your goldie's diet. Include fruits and
veggies a couple times a week. Some people feed during
the week and fast Sat, then feed peas on Sun.

Paul is absolutely right on the diet front. Variety and natural fibre. smile.gif
Also try to keep nitrAte under control and below 40ppm. Prolonged exposure to high level of nitrAte can cause buoyancy problems.

Hi,
My fantail had the beginnings of SBD when she was in a smaller tank (2 goldies in a 20 gallon) and the nitrates were consistently high.

I upgraded to a larger tank and started feeding them spirulina flakes as well as progold, peas, etc. She hasn't floated upside down since last May when I set up the 50 gallon tank--there are 3 large goldies in it.

So, a combination of plenty of space, the proper food, keeping nitrates down with partial water changes and not overfeeding will help prevent SBD.

I fed my fantails boiled peas(de-shelled) and boiled rice...

thanks everyone

so besides bananas, what kinds of fruits are ok for them to eat?

Grapes(peeled), apple slices, orange slices, madarine oranges.
Those have all been deemed as good by my kids. Although there
is the odd pih-tooey from someone. huh.gif I'm sure there's more,
but I haven't tried anything else.

I used goldifsh graze with Sunshine because he was prone to swim bladder problems and he did well until the horrid parasites came in with the elodea and killed all of my fish in that tank!
