I just moved a few weeks ago, and the new house has a water softener which is really messing up my water. The GH is 0 and I hear that a water softener puts salt into the water. Is this bad for my goldfish? What can I do about it (except remove the water softener)?

I wouldn't use it for goldies till you have that figured out.
I think you'd be ok using Kent RO right or something of the sort that adds back minerals and buffering capacity.

Might I suggest that you ask a plumber to put a tap in the line before your water softener, that way you can get unsoftened water for your guys. Might cost a bit but then no other chemicals are needed. Sometimes your outside tap is connected before the softener also,
Just a thought.

Dory, is there a waterhose outside probably that isn't connected to the water softener? Sometimes only the houselines are connected to the softener, while the hoses (for watering plants and such) are not, simply because its not needed....
