I bought a HOB filter from one of my mate and changed the sponge(because it's too dirty), replaced it with them white filter floss mat, when i turned the filter on the filter seems abit stronge and sort of blowing the fish away, how do you make it less strong? Thanks! smile.gif

Heres a pic of it:

What HOB is it? An Aquaclear (same company as Fluval) has a flow adjuster and I'd recommend you getting that instead. Or a Whisper, they have really good flow adjusters.

the fluval has a sliding bar under the outlet pipe and the left side is the lowest setting. i would leave it half way to full as it needs to be strong to bring all the waste up to the top.

i have mine sitting on the bottom to get the current round the gravel and for surface agitation i use an airstone with a valve on the tubing to keep the flow low.

i wouldnt swap the sponge for filter wool as you need the sponge for bacteria to grow on. to clean the sponges squeeze them in used tank water to keep them clean

Ok it don't have the sliding bar, the only way i changed the sponge is because he left his filter outside in the garden for like ages and the sponge dirty and all dried up.

To FishBert:
It don't say what type is but it says 1 and then Fluval underneath that in bold blue writings and theres a silver sticker says 50Khw,4W.

A fluval 1 isn't adequate filtration alone. It does 50 something gph (200l/h).

Oh well it's better than having no filtration smile.gif
PodgyGoldy
Do you put something over the hole where the water pumps out to reduce some of that force?
sandy
pointing it to the back wall should slow it down, but as its only got filter wool in it the force of the water will be strong.
PodgyGoldy
I can't point it to the back wall, because it's suction cups are placed at the ONLY at the back. sad.gif What else shall i do?

Click to view attachmentthe only other thing i can think of is to try and make a funnel effect from the nozzle. what you need to try and get is something that will fit over the end of the nozzle and then flare out, maybe a small pop bottle and cut the top off so it looks like a funnel.

edited to say my hubby *drew* this and its not to size, obviously smile.gif
PodgyGoldy
Thanks i'll try that and keep you updated!
PodgyGoldy
Yessss! It worked i used a elastic band to tie the bottle to the nozzle smile.gif

Thank You Very Much biggrin.gif
sandy
woo hoo!! glad it worked smile.gif
