hi, i have six gf. i'm not sure waht kind they are. i think i have four fan tails(two-tone, platinum, flakes, twinkie), one egg shape (nugget -don't know what kind), and a black moore (smokey). i began feeding them flakes, but then nugget developed swim bladder so i switched to sinking and that is all i have ever fed them. i have been reading that gf like variety and so i would like to try fresh food, bu i am unsure about how to feed it to them and what kind to give to them. i want to try this, but i don't want to hurt them with my inexperience. i also have an algea eater (squishy), but i don't know what kind (i'll ask this question somewhere), and so i need him to be o.k and happy with the food also. please help me give my fish variety smile.gif

Lets see, most fruit and vegetables are fine, refrain from mushrooms and strawberries for reasons I can't remember. Feed less fruits and more vegetables because of the sugar content. Peas are sure to be a hit but carrots are iffy.

Seafood is fine, cooked tuna as well (unsalted). Don't feed stuff like chicken or beef because they have too much fat (unless you feed beefhearts which are probably okay though not very natural). Shrimps are a popular choice, just dice them and throw them in.

Mine get green beans, peas, lima beans, zucchini, kiwi mostly.

Gotta be nosey.
So how big's your tank?
How long has it been set up?
Could the algae eater be a pleco?

I know next to nothing about keeping goldfish but every time I buy Daphnia for my pond fish, I buy an extra bag for my tank fish and they love it. Every so often I give them tubifix worms as well.

thank you so mush. i think i am going to start with peas. question: when they are frozen, do i defrost and peel? i think squishy might be a pleco. he is a light black with darker black spots and his underside is flat and a cream color. he has a large sucker mouth. and he is not aggressive but will chase fish out of one of the logs i have krazy.gif
my tank is 55 gallons and i just got it about two weeks ago, upgrade form a 29 gallon

i have hade the sucker and 5 of my fish for 1 year and a month. the moore i got two weeks ago on my birthday newfish.gif
am am so paranoid about the food hurting the fish so i think i will start with peas?

you could put them in your water, it defrosts fast in the tank water then peel and let it sink. it sounds like your algae eater is a common pleco? heres pics of diff. plecos: http://www.mikesfishing.com/pleco/common_plecos.htm

I nuke tank water in the microwave to heat it up, and put the frozen veggies in that to thaw. Then peel and pull apart the halves and just drop in.

Plecos have been known to latch onto goldies cause some damage.

thanks for telling me how to do it. i have a bag of frozen peas in the freezer. i will try this tomarrow and i waill let you know how it goes.
raith, squishy is a common pleco. the picture looks just like him, only a bit wider smile.gif
on the compatable fish page there is a huge warning about common plecos latching onto gf, but i haven't had any problems with him yet. although i did buy another pleco a while back and i think squishy killed him. but he leaves my gf alone. but i will keep a look out for any bad behavior. ooh i didn't know he was a common. knowing that makes me afraid for my fish! unsure.gif i hope he doesn't become a problem, he has a big attitude.

If it were me, I've move him out of the goldie tank. make sure you keep him well fed.
