500fry? Wow!

I also had bent spines. You could see them swimming in circles. Oddly, they disappeared with no trace.

Well, good luck to your fry raising! Always keep them fed!

Turtlegirl, having deformed fry among your group is something completely normal. Not every fry is gonna be perfect, there are always things not okay like curved spines, missing fins of some kind, kinks in the tail, etc. Those that have those handicaps are usually culled by the breeders, which means they take them out, therefore giving the healthy fish more room to grow. Otherwise the deformed fish will take away space and food from the healthy ones, and causes them suffering as well. Deformed fish will in most cases not suddenly become right, no spines are suddenly grow straight, fins are suddenly showing up,....Nothing of the kind. Its simply a deformity, and fish with such usualy don't make it to full adult hood anyway. ...smile.gif

What Ranchugirl says.I hope your frys do good biggrin.gif
Oh,and thats ALOT of fry

When they're small, you would only see the most obvious of deformities. It is only when they grow bigger when you start to see the other deformities. Anyway, deformed or not, they're still your fry. Great luck with them. biggrin.gif

I thought algae was good food source for frys? unsure.gif I didn't know they'd choke on it blink.gif Maybe you should try using a toothbrush to scrape it of the glass.I'm sorry I' m not much help sad.gif

Depends on what algae it is. If its the stringy kind, the little fry might swim into it, but are unable to get back out. I give them more the green water to eat than algae itself - a cup full of green water contains so much food for them, its amazing! Tiny little particles are in it, that you can't even see, but its very nutricious for them. I also scrape a bit algae off of the tank walls and squish it either between my fingers or desolve it a bit in a little water, so its not actually algae anymore, its more like a watery paste....smile.gif

Oh, and how to get rid of the algae without hurting the fry - try an eye dropper of some kind, or even a turkey baster used carefully. Suction out the algae, but watch out for the little fish. They can get sucked in as well...smile.gif
