In a series of responsed I received on my blind ranchu Kathy aka Tamianth suggested

"you might want to consider putting bio-glass cyclinders in for the extra bio bug bed. That would help with the ammonia also more."

Exactly what is this. I looked at my lfs and can't seem to find one. Is there a picture somewhere that I can see one to know exactly what I am looking for? I tried online but "Bio glass cylindar" doesn't really pull up much.

I imagine it would look like this:

It's special glass thats been made with microscopic pores for the bacteria. I think ceramic bio media would work the same.

Here is some more info on Bio-Glass:

Bio-Glass is made from natural silicate fused at a high temperature. Its pore structure is similar to that of loose soil, making it optimal for the colonization and growth of microorganisms. Its porous structure gives it up to 8 times more surface area compared to other bio-rings. Great for a wide variety of filtration systems like submersible, canister, wet-dry and power filters. For fresh or saltwater aquariums.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, the pic and site really help. I was looking for something to hang on the tank like a filter, not the media. I look some more at my LFS.

Now would this be added in place of the charcoal in the extra filter media basket, or do I need to finds something to put it in and set it in the tank?

Just replace the charcoal. You probably have charcoal in your regular cartridge anyways. Extra biological filtration is always good.
