Well , I've got a new goldfish and I don't know much, so I came here. I just don't know wether a goldfish needs an aerator or not, because mine opens and closes its mouth repeatedly,(is this normal?)and it worries me. I've got a 1 gallon and he doesen't seem comfortable, so I thought I'd ask if there is such thing as a 5 gallon tank. Just asking!
Please reply soon!

Goodness Gracious Sakes Alive! If hes a regular goldfish, he should be in a 15-20 g tank, if hes a fancy at least 10g, per fish! They open there mouths to breath, but your water peremeter could be so outta whack because of how much mess gf produce it could be killing him. there is such thing as a 5 g, but you need one at least twice that size! Sorry to be so blunt, but its true. I suggest you get a bigger tank asap.

Do you do tons of water changes? did you cycle your tank? Is it a common or a fancy GF? How big is he?

Welcome to Koko's btw. You will learn tons!

Hi! Goldfish actually need at least ten gal.s per fish. They are able to reach a size of 8inches or much bigger. They 're also very dirty fish ,so they need a tank big enough to add a good filter on for them. They love aerator's,in fact,it should be a "Must have" item.Unfortunately, your one gal is no where big enough for your goldie-is it possible for you to get a bigger tank? And if not, maybe your LFS will take him back for you? Right now,he probably isn't very happy in that small tank, and he may not be getting enough oxygen in there. sad.gif

The good news is that a 10 gallon set up isn't much more expensive than a 5 gallon. Your fish will live a longer and healthier life in a larger tank.

If you can swing a 20 gallon, so much the better. I tend to keep an eye out on bulletin boards, classified ad5, etc. for used equipment. You can get some great deals that way biggrin.gif

Welcome to Koko's welcometo.jpg . This is a great place to learn about goldfish keeping, and don't worry, a lot of us started not knowing much about goldfish and making lots of mistakes. biggrin.gif

Legolas,

welcometo.jpg I really like your name.

Your new guy is too cramped in a 1 gallon. He's breathing hard because he's not getting enough oxygen from the water. As you read around Koko's site, you're going to read that goldies need at least a 10 gallon to be happy. But even a 5 gallon would be better, and yes, they do make them. They need a filter, and an aerator, and lots of water changes with water treated with a conditioner like Aqausafe.

If you can't get a bigger tank, maybe you might want to take the goldie back, and trade for a betta. They are beautiful fish, and alot of the people here at Koko's have them. Good luck!

Darnnnnnnniiiit! I really do need an aerator!!!!!!! My dad was wrong! I'm to nnnnnn tomorrow!
Meg_Carroll
personally, i dont think an aereator will do much good if your fish is cramped. lack of space will probably kill him, aereator or not.
Legolas
I'll buy a new tank and an aerator, I will kill to keep Stripe alive!

Hi Legolas welcometo.jpg I don't know where you live, but at our nnnnnn store the 5 gallon set-ups are $34.99. The 10 gallon complete starter kits are $29.99. 10 gal cost less than the 5, but that doesn't include an air pump.

Your to be commended for getting online to find out how to take care of your fish. Good luck with your new tank. smile.gif

He is long like a trout, He is defenately not egg shaped. He is really cute! He is getting used to being in the bowl!(I bought him at a bait shop, like 10cents a piece!) He is pretty tough though! I can't figure out how to put pictures on!

Yes in this case he is a common and hes going to grow to be about a foot long or more. This is one of the many reasons you need a bigger tank. He sounds adorable tho.

Fishbert, Canadians get jipped on fish supplies, ive learned to live with it. lmao
