all over the inside of my fry tank I have found whitish grey fuzzy soft looking stuff growing. It looks like some sort of underwater mold, like you might see all over an old sandwich at the bottom of your high school locker. I syphoned the entire tank, sucking as much of this gunk up as possible. It didn't seem to be bothering my surviving fry much, but now the tank is all stirred up and there are small clumps of this stuff floating all around the tank. Is it dangerous? Does anyone know what it is? and if so, what should I do? Any recommendations? I tried to take a picture of it, but I can get one focusing on this stuff, as it is just swirling all around in there.

Help! :crp

Were there a number of left over eggs that did not develop? If so, they will develop into "fungus balls" within a day or so. It is never a good idea to have fungus in any tank, but particularly in a delicate fry tank.

If they are floating about, are they not getting filtered out rapidly? I am assuming you have no gravel base for the babies, so the fuzzy debris should either be filtered out or sink to the bottom where you can "blow" it back into the water to be filtered out soon.

If there is too much to be filtered and/or it is not coming out, I think that I would temporarily move the fry to another container - shake out the filter so it keeps its cycle and move it to the other container. Then clean out the original tank. 99% of your cycle is in the filter, so by cleaning all the contaminated water you should be OK if you keep the filter.

I always prefer mechanical control as opposed to chemical treatments whenever possible.
