My 55g tank came with two Perfecto hoods/lights. One of them is driving me crazy making noise when I turn on the light. It's always been that way since I first got it and I usually don't even turn it on. I hate just using one light though. My husband says it's like Chinese water torture!

Is there any way to fix this...or should I just trash it and buy a new hood/light? Anyone know if I can get just the Perfecto light separately from the hood?

I would check with the place you got it from and see if they have any
answers. Or if they'll exchange it. I've got a 20 that has a good hum
to it. I think it's the ballast that needs changing. Maybe that's what
your noise is. Here's a couple links that sell just the strip light. smile.gif

Thank you so much for the links. I didn't know I could buy the light by itself. Someone else had mentioned the ballast to me. Do you know how I would change it? I hate to buy the whole light if a ballast is all that I need.

The little round thing under the bulb is what your looking for. I would
take it with you when looking for a new one so it matches. smile.gif

I think the little round thing by the bulb is called the starter, the ballast is a transformer / coil type unit under the reflector with wires on it. If you can, check for loose mounting screws, the ballasts vibrate and sometimes the screws come loose. I have found that as the tubes get older they sometimes cause the lamp to make noise too.

Hope this helps.

Oh wow! Ya'll are the absolute greatest!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I don't know what I did, but whatever it was, I've got a quiet light! I'm so happy I could do a dance! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I unscrewed all the screws and took the light fixture off. I couldn't see anything that might have been loose and thought it was a lost cause. I put it all back together again, but the bulb in, and turned it on. Not one bit of noise! The light is working perfectly with no noise at all!!!!!

It must have been a loose screw although it seemed like they were all screwed in pretty tightly. I don't really know what the problem was.

I've lived with this light making this really loud noise for 4 years!!! I can't even begin to tell you how heavenly it is to be able to turn the lights on and not have to listen to that racket.

I wish I had found this website years ago! Thanks a bunch!!
