I have had good success keeping groups of female bettas together and I currently have one tank with 7 and one tank with 4. I think the key is to buy them from the same tank in the first place, not ones that have been jarred. If they are living communally in the tank in the store, then they should do well in your home tank. I would recommend getting a group of five or more

(I know I have four in one tank, but the store only had four living together in the same tank and they all looked good with no fin damage, so I figured they had already sorted out their pecking order and they get along fine in my tank, too
I have read that keyhole cichlids are quite non-aggressive and suitable for community tanks, but I have never had them myself. I think I might like to try a pair, though
