I know some tetras can live in Ph 8 water, but I dont know which ones are the hardiest?
emmahj
I have neon tetras and my water has a pH of 8.0 - 8.2. They do just fine in that. smile.gif

I do not know much about other tetras, but I *think* that black neon tetras and rummynose tetras are supposed to be tough.

Cool smile.gif Thanks
Kev
i wouldnt say the rummynose where right for you though, they are usually recomended for discus aquariums as they much proeffer the soft more acidic water... how about some glowlights neons or cardinals ?

My water is ph 8.0 and I did well with rummynosed tetras. At the time, I didn't know anything about the requirements of fish re: ph, and I just bought a shoal of rummynose and they thrived. I also had luck with emperor tetras and cardinals.

The other small fish that did well for me in my water was harlequin rasboras. I really like those little guys biggrin.gif

Rummynoses are better in lower Ph, but will survive in a higher Ph. In lower Ph their noses are brighter and thats how some discus keepers know the water is doing great.

I use to have Black tetras, and they did well, and were really hardy smile.gif

Black skirt/white skirt tetras do good in my 8.2 water, much better than neons or black neons, though those lasted several years. I have some black skirts going on 8+ years now. But black skirts tend to be nippy little brats, so make sure their tankmates can handle it. They do best in groups of 6 or more.

Oh i know, i had the black tetras (they look like the black skirt tetra)
And i had mine for 8 years, but sadly they passed away.

Wow, they live for quite long dont they?
Are any of them compatible with platys? smile.gif

Here's a chart of lifespans:

http://www.aquaria.info/faqs/lifespan.htm

My black skirts hassled my platies a bit, but it mainly depends on how much room you have and how many you can get. If you get 6 or so, they'll bug each other and leave everyone else alone for themost part. If you get 3, they will bug each other ANd everyone else, hehe. But they are a larger tetra, I had one big female that was almost 3" body size, so they do need more room than some of the smaller tetras.

Cool Thanks smile.gif

Hi Myaj,
That is really a neat page. thanks for sending it.

I currently have a cory that is 12 years old, so he has done well! I also have a peckoltia (clown plec) that is at least 15 years old, so he is an old timer, as well!

head and tail light tetras, and peguine tetras will do fine I also have had a neon tetra live for almost 2 yers in my hard water. live through 2 schools as well as fish that would have made it a snack. but most info on neons claims soft acidic to nutral. Ive been also reading though that the longer a species has been bread in captivity the more they can adapt to differentph ranges.

Yes, black neons are pretty hardy, and very fun too smile.gif I've got a few in my tank which were rescues. They were perfectly fine at the pH 8.4 ( i didn't know it was so high) but I lowered the pH gradually and they seem even happier now. I think most tetras will do okay in a slightly higher pH if its gradual and all the other conditions are good smile.gif

BTW: the black neon tetras names are Ruby and Rummert biggrin.gif

Cool smile.gif ill go for black neons, only one question remains, are black neons delicate?
tinkerbell
