i bought one giant snail to clean my tank. i heard they are good with goldfish so i bought one. the snail died 3 weeks later. sad.gif

about 3 weeks after that i found 5 baby snails... so i put them in a little tank with a filter. i had NO idea they could reproduce so young. i now have about 50 very tiny babies.

i can't have that many.

anyone have any idea what i can do with them?

i am not sure i can keep any of them... because at the time the mother snail died, my oldest goldie started getting fin rot and bad swim bladder. i have had him for 8+ years and he was never sick before. the people at goldfishconnection.com said snails often have illnesses. and my ranchu is still really sick and i am scared he is going to die.

i want to find them good homes or something. would a pet shop take them? any ideas?

the only other tank i have is a 2 gallon. and with all of our other animals and a new baby, we really do not have the room. they are sitting on my kitchen counter now taking up valuable space. i really had no idea they reproduce so quickly at such young an age... or i would have taken steps to assure this would not happen... found them homes sooner. like i said, i can't keep them in my tank because i don't know if they are carrying whatever their mother carried which got my ranchu very ill.... sad.gif

they are big, brown they just called her a giant snail.

It might be a giant ramshorn. You could ask your LFS if they would take them. My LFS take my snail babies but the snails have to be a certain size, and they swap me for some plants which is cool!

Maybe you can post a pic of what the snails looks like and post an ad in the "BUY & TRADE" forum here. There may be someone here that lives close to you that would be happy to take them off your hands smile.gif

FYI: Snails aren't the best algae eaters, they prefer other foods.

Anyways, here's Donya's answer about the snail disease thing:
QUOTE
For diseases...there has been some speculation/rumor of snails being able to transmit ich, but personally I have seen no evidence that it is possible if no water is transfered between infected tanks. The ich parasite does not attack snails, so it's not like moving a fish between tanks since the snail is not a host. If you get a big 4" snail, be aware that some of those guys may be wild caught. I had one of those bring in grub worms/flukes once, and those can be transmitted to fish. Don't let that scare you away from getting a snail though, it's one of those statistically extreemly rare things only is a problem for people like me that intentionally take the risk and get bizzare stuff knowing that it's wild caught. I've braught in all sorts of kooky bugs and stuff that way. Anyway...other than the ich rumor and grub worms, I think that's it! I havn't found any transmitable fungal/bacterial infections.

Where do you live becuase i would not mind to have a couple more snails. If you live kind of close to Ballwin, MO then i could maybe pay for shipping depending on the price and then i could take some off of your hands!!!!! Could you tell me what state you live in and then we can decide from there.
