Since coming to this forum I have learnt so much about fishkeeping.
There are alot of people here that keep their fish in "rubbermaid tubs"
What are "rubbermaid tubs" and where do you get them from?. Are they designed for fish or are they designed for another purpose but they are a suitable container for fish. Does anyone know if I can buy one in Australia and if so where?
Sorry about all the quesions, but I have been curious about this for ages

I do not know what the equivilant of a "Rubbermaid" tub would be in Australia, but they are large storage containers made from tough, semi-flexible plastic. Some are semi-opaque (my favorite for they let light in) and others come in every color of the rainbow.
Because they have strong, tough sides, they can support the weight of water well, as well as hold a filter on the side. The make a wonderful emergency tub. "RubberMaid" is simply the brand name of one of the "higher end" makers of the tubs. There are many manufacturers - many sizes and shapes.
This one contains my supplies, but doubles as an iso container when needed.

Thank you for clearing that up. I think I should buy one and keep as an emergency tank. All my spare tanks are less than 15 gallons, so if any of my tanks break or has a crack, the spare tanks want be enough room for my fish. I'm guessing the best place to buy these would be a hardware store (????)

Do you have WalMarts there? I suppose a hardware store or any big general store that has stuff for the home.

We don't have them in Australia but there are lots of alternatives, try the hardware stores. Do you have a Bunnings or Hardware House near you?

It's so handy to have an Aussie here in these sort of situation Annette!
Yes I have a local Bunnings store in Ballarat so I will check it out. I'm a bit scared though because they sell so much neat stuff that I want for the house. I hope I dont walk out with the whole store on my credit card

Oh...I forgot to ask, do Aussie's call it "rubbermaid tub" as well, or is there another name for it here?

Rubbermaid is the brand name of a manufacturer, so you may not have that particular brand by you.
Just ask for storage containers, large ones for storing things like blankets, etc...

naa i'd never heard of "rubbermaid" before i came here. We just call them, big freakin plastic boxes, or whatever other describing words you'd like to add

I have one, a 100L one when i was transporting my goldfish. I cycled it so i could bring it over here and then cycle my normal tank without the fish being distressed, they lived in the tub for a couple of weeks. Although the sides do bow heaps, i got a couple of those stretchy rope things with the hooks on the end, and stretched them over the top. Seemed to work pretty well.
