Since removing Medakas from my snail tank due to the anttenna pecking that was going on, fry have been popping up. My Medakas must have laid eggs before I removed them. Here is a pic. It might be a little hard to see becuase they are so small



I keep them in a guppy breeding tank in with my two ranchus. When they get bigger I may put them back in with my beloved apple snails

I keep them in a seperate container in the same tank as my ranchus, so they cant get at the babies. The container is similar to the ones you can get for keeping bettas. Like this one:



The container floats in the tank I have it secured with pegs just it case my ranchus try to top it over and eat the babies

Thats really cool! I've never seen medaka fry before.

You might want to think twice about putting the fry in the tank with the snails, im sure if the perents got a little too picky at the snails, their fry will too.

That's what I was thinking too, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them. Maybe when they get bigger I can put them in with my GF, but if they dont swim fast enough they will be GF lunch. I think I will have to put my thinking cap on <_<

my dad wont let me get snails. :[

Why not David? Is he scared they will breed out of control?

You could try one or two of these things hanging in one of your tanks:

breeder nets

I'm sure they will be happy in the nets until they are big enough for the goldies to not want them.

Thanks Paul, I will check that out when I go to the LFS next week. I think the net is a better idea as it's getting fresh water through it more so than the breeding trap

I ve got one of these little netboxes on standby in case I ever need it.

I also have the same exact breederbox that your using right now. I found that the breederbox doesnt seem to allow quite enough flowthrough as I would like (as you have suggested).

How are your medaka frys doing?How big are they now?

They are going really good. I have 10 all together. I will post a pic when I get home from work tonight They have grown quite a bit

I just feed them fry food. Its very fins..like dust. They seem to love it

I'm glad to hear they're doing great.Raising fry for me, is exciting and then again frustrating when you end up with casualties

Hey Selena i've got the exactly same breeder box as you when my blue oranda trys to bully my r/w fantail(Click my goldies picture in my sig to see them), but i give them both away because the fantail is getting aggresive because of the crappy oranda

I'm sorry you had to give your fish away. Did they go to good homes?

I don't know the lfs told me some oldman bought it along with a 4-5'' oranda? Maybe he knows about goldfish as well, because he bought the 4-5'' oranda for like 13 pounds

Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are "medaka" ? Does anyone here have experience keeping them with goldfish? I'd be very interested to hear anything!

lol sorry about my long lost post. he did not say exactly why, nor did he say anything about it. its just he HATES slugs... they roam in the backyard a lot.
