Changing filter cartridges
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have owned whisper filter for 10-15 gallon tank for over a month and I'm wondering how I can change the cartridges without screwing anything up (cycle, water quality, etc). Anyone have an idea what I can do?

How long has the tank been up and running and what is the ammonia, and nitrite, and nitrate readings. Also do you have rocks in the bottom of the tank. On more thing what is the Model name of the Whisper?

Also, what kind of media do you use?

Ammonia is .5 ppm, Nitrite is 0 ppm. I don't have a test kit for Nitrate. I have river rock instead of gravel and the Whisper is the Power Filter for 5-15 gallon aquariums. The filter has been running since December 10. I'm not sure what media means..... is it like water conditioners?

What I would do is just rinse it. You can remove it off of the black stick like thing that holds it and rinse it in tank water that you removed from the tank to get rid of the gunk in the cotton filter. This is the best way to do it and then when the filter gets really bad after about 2 months then all you need to do it just buy another one. I would keep one of the sleves for a back up. Let it dry out and then keep it in a baggy. I did this when I had this filter years ago. I do suggest when you can get a filter with a boiwheel on it, this way when you do change the filter pad the tank cant loose it cyle easly

Hope this helps

Usually I rinse mine for several months but finally do need to replace them. I just cut a small part of the filter pad off the old one and stuff it into the new cartridge. That way I still have good biobugs. I also have some whisper 5-10s and I put some used media in them to jumpstart my new tanks.
