Filters are not essential are they? I mean, I have heard of several fish living for years and never having a filter. I got my fish and told myself I would wait a while before getting one -if i thought i really needed it. However whaT I have heard about them- some are expensive[the ones sold near me] they need bits replacing, and sometimes break.. My fish seem fine without one, so I am just going to spare myself the trouble.. is this a bad idea? Is there anyone else who has had a tank without a filter?

Hi Keiza!!

This is a very bad idea. The filters are nessasary for the cycle of the tank. Most of your good bacteria lives in that filter. This is vital to have a healthy tank and fish.
Filters can range in cost, and if you get a good one it is years and years before something usually happens to it. I can give you brands if you want.
And I too have heard stories, however they are rare and far to find. Most fish that live in a filterless tank or bowl are sick most of the time and eventually die.
To successfully have a tank without a filter you would need to change 100% of the water EVERY day to ensure that the fish would not get sick. Are you willing to take that responsibilty on? Most are not.

Filters are more of an asset than a bother. They really do help to maintain a healthy tank. If you need more assistance just let us know.

Many fish can live without a filter, but they are in entirely different circumstances than what we have in a tank.

Nature has a natural filtratrion - flowing streams, evaporation, etc, as well as a biofilter that works constantly. Fish are not concentrated in one place, either - they are spread out quite thinly. When you look in a lake or a stream, you will be lucky to see one or two fish.

Any time you put a high concentration of fish into a "small" water volume, you need to find a way to deal with the fish waste. Nature cannot do it - it is simply too much - besides, your water is not flowing down a stream!

A filter is a mechanical invention to allow us to keep fish in small, attractive water containers in our houses, for our enjoyment.

As I am sure you have read here, the most efficient way to do this is to create a biological filter with beneficial bacteria that your tank water flows through constantly - hense a power filter of some nature.

As Laurie says, other than a filter, you will need to change the water every day. That is a BIG bother. I would rather spend my time enjoying the fish! smile.gif

My fish have survived about 2 months without a filter.. but If I need one, ill get one.. would a bio-wheel do with a pump or should i get a proper filter..

You are lucky you haven't had a problem so far!!!

A hang on the back power filter with a biowheel are very good. You can clean the filter occasionally and change the cartridge without worrying about meesing with your cycle with a biowheel. I highly recommend them. They are much easier to up keep and help with the cycle.
