So I went to Petco today to pick up some cat food when i thought i might stop by the fish section. There's this 46g bow tank that i've been eyeing down for awhile. Turns out they are having a sale on it...145.99 for tank, hood, filter, gravel, heater, and testing kit. I'm trying to convince my mother into buying it for me for my birthday present (which is at the end of the month). I think i got her on the 95% percental side to yes. but I have a question, this maybe a silly one but what is the max weight of a fishtank that you could put on the second floor of a house?

Man that is a steal!!! I bought our 46 gal for around 250.00 with the stand. It is oak, though.
I hope you get it. To answer your question about the weight and a second floor, hmmm. The tank alone with water will be around 460 lbs. Depending on the stand how heavy that is, you have to account for that as well.
Now whether or not your floor can hold that kind of weight, only you guys or a carpenter would know. It will depend on where you put it. I would think it would have to go near a weight barring wall, that way the beams can hold it.
I would be careful, I would hate to have you get it all set up and wham instant rain on the ground level.

no i'm not taking the stand because it's going on top of my oak dresser. I wont if i could use a stud finder on the floor to find beams......

One thing to consider with package deals like that is the filter and heater, etc is usually crap and not nearly big enough or reliable enough for the tank. So make sure you take that into consideration.
As far as the weight, most likely you'd be just fine. I've kept 2 29 gallon tanks on a double stand, so almost 60 gallons over a 12x30" area with no issues at all on the 2nd floor. A 46 gallon tank really isn't that big, and if our floors can't hold up 500 lbs we'd probably be in a lot of trouble when we have parties and have 20 friends jumping off the furniture. Or is that just my friends that do that?
Heck, even if you have a basement your "main" floor is technically a ceiling to the basement... I honestly wouldn't worry about a 46 gallon tank. I questioned my 60 a little because its a cube and only 2x2', but my boyfriend is a drafter for a home builder and he said it could easily handle it.

I hope you get it too! =o)
And I agree, your floors will hold that, if they wouldn't then things would be falling through left right and centre heehee.
